Forums Other Destination advice North Norfolk suggestions

I’m looking at a three to five day break in the UK during August. This will be off the back of a long weekend break in North Norfolk, so unfortunately we will be working remotely for much of the time, but we’d like to stay in the area.

Doesn’t need to be a hotel, could be a cottage, boat, BnB or pub. Not camping or caravaning.

    Nice to haves:
    – easy coastal access
    – walkable to pub/restaurant (if not onsite)
    – fast reliable internet
    – large comfortable bed
    – big bath
    – ev charging
    – open fire (it is August after all!)

I’m guessing my hotel points won’t help, a glance at Landmark Trust for my dates isn’t promising… but I have hotels.com credit to burn, and I’m not adverse to a good AirBnb.

    Any suggestions?

@Memewsweeper – you are asking for a lot of things. The two best agents are probably Sowerbys and Norfolk Holiday Cottages but you will find it difficult, partly because it’s August, but also because most good places are let on a weekly basis. For hotels, Titchwell Manor and the Victoria at Holkham and the latter has good access to the beach as well as things to see/do on the estate. Access to the beach is complicated! Where the beach is directly accessible by car, it will be crowded, where there is a bit of a walk across the marshes, even in August you will have a wonderful, quiet beach, eg from Thornham or Brancaster. I’m not sure you will find internet or mobile reception so good.

Thanks @JDB, I realise the full list of asks is damn-near impossible 🙂

I’m happy for Mon – Thur let, I know some cottages do that, I’ll check out those agents.

I shall also check out the hotels you’ve suggested.

@memesweeper – one other thing to remember if you are there in August and plan to go out to dinner, booking is essential on any day of the week at anywhere half decent.

Thanks for the reminder! my last two meals in Norfolk were well short of the ‘decent’ standard…

I asked my husband for suggestions for North Norfolk in August, his reply – Suffolk!

Briarfields Hotel across the road from Titchwell Manor is also a good option (may still have a private path to the RSPB reserve); also the Blakeney Hotel or the Manor Coastal hotel. The White Horse, Brancaster Staithe another option. A little more out of the way, there’s the Pheasant at Kelling or the Wiveton Bell. All have good food. I’ve stayed in all of them, also some self-catering which were pretty poor for the money – prefer the large lodges/statics on Pinewoods.

Internet access in North Norfolk is usually quite good, I don’t have a problem with Tesco (O2) or EE, used to have Vodafone when we lived in Holt.

Traffic, people and parking are a bit of a nightmare in summer. Wells-next-the-Sea has a large beach car park but it fills up very quickly; when full you get redirected to the Town Beach car park, all day parking costs £13.50 (nice little earner for the Holkham estate). Lady Anne’s Drive opposite the Victoria is another Holkham Estate car park, again very busy but gives access to Holkham beach and nice walks to the east and west along the beach or through the woods from the Lookout cafe.

If you are happy to accept NW Norfolk you could consider the Neptune in Old Hunstanton. This is a “restaurant with rooms”. It is a few minutes walk from a very nice beach and the restaurant itself is Michelin starred.

Barefoot Retreats is another good website to try.

    @GillyDee
, i live in Suffolk so that made me chuckle.

Failing North Norfolk i know some cracking places in The New Forest.

A few years back we stayed in one of the lodges on the Holkham estate – these are let via Original cottages which have a decent selection across Norfolk

+1 for The Manor Coastal Hotel & Inn at Blakeney. Have stayed there a couple of times recently and would do so again. Good coastal views and walks from there and you can get an organised boat trip from Morston Quay (walking distance) to see the seal colonies if that’s your thing. Enjoyed dinner at The Moorings restaurant in Blakeney. As others have said likely to be very busy in August,
