Looking for some recommendations for good basic hotel in NYC for a 4 night stay in late Feb. I was thinking of redeeming 20% melia voucher for a stay at inside melia new york. Amex also have a lot of moxy hotel with a 100 credit and room upgrade but some of reviews are not great with dubious room service charges.
I’m not set on manhattan so open to brookyln or other places. In terms of budget would be max would be £150-175per night. I don’t plan on spending a lot of time in the hotel.
Moxy Brooklyn in Williamsburg is located just around the corner from where I used to live there. Cool and hip neighbourhood with good transport and ferry links. 🔗
May I ask the purpose of the trip? If it’s say a once in a lifetime trip with older parents in tow, I’d very much suggest sticking to Manhattan. You really don’t want the hassle of being beholden to the (ever more threatening) subway.
Also New York is IME nothing like London in terms of nice non-central neighbourhoods. Even gentrified areas others suggested to me I found very mixed to low end; I would have had no interest in staying in them.

It’s a solo mini break. It will be my first time spending more than 24hrs in the city so keen to make most of it. Weather permitting I’ll spend most of my time walking around. Ellis Island and Rockerfeller centre at night are only items on bucket list for the trip.
I probably should have mentioned that I’m arriving and departing from EWR.
Hilton points are on sale. If you have the 100% offer, they cost 0.5 cents a point. You might want to check how much the Hilton hotels cost in points. Some might even offer free breakfast and if I remember correctly, you also avoid resort fees for points redemptions.
For ease of going to/from Manhattan maybe just get the train from EWR into Penn Station. Fire up google maps and search around that area. It’s not the best but look at the reviews and there’s plenty in your price range.
Weather can be brutal in Feb, city can get snowed up in a matter of hours, so somewhere close to the subway is ideal.
Rockerfeller is the one to go to rather than the Empire State. If the weather is kind then the quintissential walks these days are the High Line, Brooklyn Bridge and if you have the legs then back via the Manhattan Bridge, and then West side/Hudson river path.
Get up to Central Park as well if you can, some of the world’s best museums and people watching in that area.
I’ve stayed at Moxy Times Square on a solo trip before – tiny rooms but on your own with a normal amount of luggage it’s absolutely fine for a few days. Very central location too.
Should get a Hampton Inn/Home2Suites around Times Sq. at that price
around those dates: basic breakfast included and no nasty resort fee!Times square is too busy/noisy for me, just have to look at the live cams! I’d recommend the Hyatt place, new when we stayed very cost effective, plenty of Irish bars around, if you wanted that, and restaurants, same value as the one on Bath road Heathrow, 4 minute walk to the port authority bus terminus, ideal for a trip to Woodbury common, for some retail therapy.
Financial district can have some bargains and is a well connected area transport wise. Some of my old colleagues used zoom in to Manhattan on the Path from Hoboken also. Could be cheaper and a good view of the skyline.
Thanks for all the useful tips. I’m going to explore the hilton points purchase as suggested by @BBbetter. I have a 80% bonus on my account
@davefl thanks for suggestion for the walk. If the weather is on my side i can easily notch up 40k steps in a day 🙂I was also exploring the idea of a day trip to Niagara falls via LGA but think i might leave it for another time.
Holiday Inn Express Brooklyn/Sunset Park.
150 metres to the metro (9th Avenue, D Line), then 7 stops or 30 minutes (it’s on an express route) to Wholefoods at Bryant Park.
Stayed there twice now, have had it as low as £120 a night with the Railcard discount.
If you’re looking at Hilton’s the Midtown Manhattan was excellent in October. Big and impersonal but great location for subway and walking to sites, and found the shop/deli in the reception useful for snacks, and a great way of spending the resort fee.
Walking wise (didn’t quite get to your 40k a day but did exceed 30k a day for five days, ouch!), I’d recommend south from Brooklyn Bridge, through the park and Squibb Park and along Brooklyn Heights for some great views, and plenty of places to sit. Roosevelt Island another nice place to walk around on the river, and can combine with the NYC Ferry for a trip down the East River to Wall Street and/or Brooklyn. Enjoy!
I’d first of all look at when the hotel opened and go from there. Stayed in both the Motto Chelsea and Hilton Fashion District last year – they are almost identical in location, room size and price, but the Motto is significantly fresher and nicer despite technically being a lower level brand.
You can often save money by staying in Lower Manhattan / the Financial District, which I don’t think is the worst choice as you’ll be close to many of the attractions and areas you would have to visit anyways, with easier access to both ferries, subway and highways (much quicker than Ubering up and down the avenues) than many of the locations further north.
I’ve booked the Best Western Plus Soho Hotel. It a newish hotel from what I’ve read online.
I was able to do a status match to top tier of best western loyalty programme though not sure that will get me anything. Radisson VIP is accepted.
FYI
Choice hotels currently running a status match. They will not match Radisson VIP members but was able to match via best western status
