Without an warning my beloved Coutts account has been closed. I am now being asked to open a Natwest account with something called a “debit card”.
Anybody familiar with what should I do next? CEDR, MCOL, national news? Is there a law firm I can pay using my BAPP, need some Avios for my France/Portugal constant travels!
I imagine @JDB is the chap to ask.
Send them a LBA, maybe?!
Coutexit.
I loved it. Hope he ends up bartering onions from his garden for healthcare.
You’ve obviously been giving voice to unacceptable political views and require re-education if recent media reports are to be believed … if you slip Rob a tenner he might delete them all 🙂
@NorthernLass I think @yonasl was posting a reference to the fact that Coutts has apparently decided it doesn’t want Nigel Farage as a customer any longer.
What that says is that firstly they were plainly happy to have him as a customer, at least for a while, and that secondly NF’s income has obviously taken a nose dive recently. I wonder if he has an Amex Platinum and whether he is still eligible? 🤔
Yes, my reply was supposed to be tongue in cheek, given the number of LBA’s people on here have reported to have dispatched!
Actually I know exactly how Nigel feels. I inadvertently slipped below the required £5k balance on my Halifax current account and failed to be awarded my free Vue cinema ticket last month. Ruined my plans to see the new Indiana Jones film.

He’s claiming he never had the required balance, but they chose to turn a blind eye.

@Northern Lass – as it happens, I bank with your bankers having parted ways with Coutts five years ago as did most of my family, after banking with them for over 250 years. FD is very simple, no fancy products but I find them very efficient and when required you get to talk to a human who is invariably sensible.
A columnist in the Independent (article copied to/by Yahoo) suggested it was because he was a politically exposed person(PEP). As there are laws/regulations around PEP’s, they are more of a headache than they are worth.
Also the article suggested his political party was set up as a company and not a political party. I think NF was the CEO. Again I suspect another headache no bank will want.
Finally they closed his personal and business accounts. Not knowing NF’s life very well, it could be that his political party/company would need the business acccount. Again I suspect a headache for any bank.
No wonder they got rid, whatever NF told the British public.
Farage, speak to SJP. They are very good.
I love how everyone jumped to help with the account move! Well done HfP crowd.
FT saying it is because he recently finished paying his mortgage (this £500,000 from Russia must have helped).
@JDB, yes our main current account and mortgage are with FD – I absolutely agree that they are (uniquely, IME) effective at addressing any issues. You can always speak to a human and they really know their stuff. In contrast, I needed to sort out a minor issue with Halifax recently and after some utterly fruitless toing and froing with messaging, gritted my teeth and called them. It took the agent 40 minutes to open a fairly simple case and then couldn’t deal with it so had to get someone to call me back.
Incidentally – Farage could move his account to FD, I think they’re offering £175 for an account swap atm. Every little bit helps and all that.
@BBB – he needs to speak to Sarah Jessica Parker??
The PEP obligations have become a licence for banks to close accounts of anyone who’d require manual checking effort. I do feel something needs to be done to bring some sense and fairness to the situation.
Not much lost. Coutts has never really been the same since when NatWest took them over.
I am sure NF has a real private bank somewhere he can fall back on… maybe Germany?
Maybe he is better at organising referendums than banking. The excuse to have an account at Coutts seems to be he needed to have Euros because of his job as an EuroMP.
I suppose he never heard of the many options at Lloyd’s, Barclays, HSBC and others to have a multi currency account.

NL, easier to put in 1.5k and top up revolut with £500 once a month as that hits both requirements.
