Forums Payment cards American Express Moving & working abroad with Amex

    Morning all,

Hypothetically speaking, if I were to move abroad (i.e. not in the UK), to a country where Amex do not currently issue cards, what would be the best way to maintain an amex card/account? Get an international Platinum card in Dollars or Euros?

Just keep the UK card? What’s the purpose of maintaining an Amex?

Yeah I would say get an ICC if the country you’re in uses EUR or USD. Probs the only way to keep earning MR without spending ludicrous amounts on foreign currency exchange fees.

    Thanks for this.

I spoke to Amex and managed to get through to the ICC team. I will need to have a UK address on the card account, so must apply for the card beforehand – they will not allow any EU address.

Does anyone know if you can ‘pool’ the Membership Rewards accounts with a standard UK-issued card (in £ sterling)? The guy I spoke to didn’t seem too sure. I’m eventually intending to keep only the ICC card open.

You can’t pool the points as they are issued by a distinct entity. Rob has written a few articles on these cards – very helpful.

Thanks – I had a look and found this article. Posting a link to it here so that others can benefit from finding it here in future:

Global transfer to a US Amex as long as you have someone in the US who can receive the card for you.
I used to have the ICC but cancelled after one year as I couldn’t see any point. US Amex are much better in terms of perks and there’s no forex fee.

Interesting – thanks for this. Would I need to have a US address to maintain the account, or just to have the card sent there?

Was there anything else that you didn’t like about the ICC card, apart from any FX fees?

When I moved back to the UK from the US, Amex US had no issues with me keeping the US card and putting a UK address on it (I didn’t keep the card for long but basically it was ok 2 years ago)
