Thank you all very much. @steve do you recall which of the two local networks you opted for?

No, sorry, I think we left both phones on automatic network selection.

In case my previous post wasn’t clear, when I said there was a “choice” of two, I meant that Airalo had roaming agreements with two networks, allowing the phone to use either, rather than anything that forced pre-choice.

We have Three accounts which include Go Roam which covers Malaysia. On landing at KUL yesterday we switched on our phones whilst still on the plane and almost immediately got a text saying we had used 90% of our allowance.

When I looked at my account I found that I had had 4 charges in quick succession of £15 for 3072 kbytes GPRS. We contacted Three on chat and they said that it could be a Maritime service.

Can anyone throw any light on this – if we both had it surely others have had these charges too.

Simple Malaysia isn’t a go roam country

Welcome to Malaysia. It’s a max of GBP3.00/min to call, GBP1.25/min to receive a call, 35p to send a text & GBP6.00/MB. If you don’t want to be charged, turn off data roaming and use WiFi. For useful info and how to avoid unexpected charges, visit 3.uk/ekiwb. To opt out/in to these messages text STOP/START to 330.

It is a Go Roam Around the World Extra destination, so I am presuming qc that you are on pay monthly? And have some roaming days left?

I’ve been using Three PAYG when required for a couple of years now (since my monthly contract stopped Go Roam and I cancelled it). However, just got back from 3.5 weeks in New Zealand and Australia, and my Go Roam simply wouldn’t work. I spent many frustrating hours on live chat with Three, but no result. My husband has an identical phone to me, and his Go Roam worked with no issue at all.

Have gone back to Smarty (who do free roaming in Europe but not further afield), so will be consulting the thread when we go somewhere exotic, as no way am I going back to the hassle of Three. It has served me well previously, but the live chat/support made me lose the will to live, plus didn’t fix the problem!

It appears you can no longer get a Skype number, or add credit to existing Skype numbers:

Does anyone know of a similar service to Skype that operates on a PAYG basis?

Tesco International Calling App is good for outgoing on a PAYG basis.

Afternoon travellers – does anyone know of an easy way to get an actual Japanese mobile phone number whilst in Japan (or ahead of travel)? Offspring are going on three month pilgrimage trip and will need a Japanese number to firm up plans whilst there.

We have looked at Mobal and Moshi Moshi via Airalo but they will be on the island of Shikoku and are unsure about coverage.

    TIA

@Skywalker If you need a SIM with a working Japanese phone number in advance of actually being there, I hear it’s basically impossible now. Once you’re actually in the country it should be fine. I’ve similarly heard good things about Mobal or Hanacell (they are the same company). Other providers are available, but most are aimed at residents and require proof of residence to buy. It sounds like Mobal offer eSIMs too. The coverage uses NTT Docomo, and does seem to cover even small islands, so Shikoku should be absolutely fine.
