Forums Payment cards American Express Minimum wait between cancellation and reapplying

What’s the shortest time you have waited after cancellation of (Gold) Amex before successfully applying for a new one?

I ask as I recently referred someone to take advantage of the enhanced referral offer of 12k MR points, which ends next week.

The person I referred received a reply: “Our system shows that you have previously submitted an application for this Card. We have therefore cancelled this duplicate application.”
Their previous application for a Gold card was just under a year ago, albeit the cancellation was more recent.

    Scott.

In case anyone is having the same issue, I’m not really any further forward, but the person I referred contacted live chat, who didn’t know what the issue was so advised phoning the new applications team.

An initial agent there stated simply that a gold card was already held, hence the rejection. This isn’t the case, so was passed to a second agent who spent some time looking into it, but still couldn’t advise of the reason.

They have now passed it to a back office team, with a response due within 3-5 working days. Unfortunately this takes us past the enhanced sign-up period, so I can foresee a battle to get the points if the referral ends up being successful.

Cancellations seem to take a long time to get updated in the Amex system. Of course the card is blocked etc, but for the purpose of applying for new cards, the record doesn’t seem updated quickly.
I had 4 cards and cancelled one about two months back. Applied for a new card (not the one I held) and was rejected for holding 4 cards!
