Forums Payment cards American Express Minimum income for Platinum

  • 48 posts

I know that there is no longer a minimum income requirement to apply for Platinum. However, in reality what is the approximate minimum income that Amex looks for to accept an application? My partner applied a few days ago with a income of around £20k and additional household income declared in the application of £70k. The application was rejected and the email states that “the decision was based on your current annual income”. It then says that if you have other sources of income, such as additional household income, to call them. So what is the point in declaring additional annual in the application if they just ignore it??

Amex have tightened up their acceptance rate a lot since the pandemic and various factors come into it, regardless of what message you get from them. If your wife contacts them, they may well say apply again in 3 months and she would be accepted at that point (you have to wait 90 days minimum between applications in any case). They might want her to reduce the number of other cards she has, or reduce current credit limits, or have concerns about other financial commitments – £70k should be fine as an income per se but it does depend on what else is going on with your money.

Experienced the same with a lot higher household income you have mentioned – holder does have a bapp and then got accepted same day for the Barclaycard. swings and roundabouts.

I would call them then, explain about additional income, and see if they will reconsider.

If you have other Amex cards, ask to reallocate/ redistribute your available credit across existing and applied-for cards.

As Rob and others have said a number of times now. The name of the game is no longer income but expenditure. They will make assumptions about your level of surplus and therefore ability to afford credit.

Do you have an account with Amex already?

My combined annual salary/additional income is about half of yours, and I was accepted for Platinum without any issues.

However I’ve had a BAPP card with Amex for over 5 years, that I’ve put a lot of spend on but always paid off in full every month.

In addition, I lowered my credit limit by about half from ~£15k on the advice of members here before applying for Platinum.

If you don’t already have an Amex card and want to maximise your SUBs, you’d be better advised to apply for the Marriot Bonvoy Amex card first (double SUB until 30th May), before moving on to the BAPP or Platinum card.

I tried to apply today and was received the same rejection email. I called them up but the agent just said I didn’t meet the criteria other than asking to confirm my income. If I tried again with another agent do you think they’d tell me what I need to review?

My wife applied with zero income and my salary as household income and was rejected entirely. A few days later I applied, obviously the household income and spend profile remaining identical, and was accepted with a £50,000 limit (double what I have ever had from them)…
