So I book a villa in the sun on Marriott H&V taking advantage of the 150 off 500 spend on Amex.
The villa listing clearly states in large letters that it has 600Mb ADSL. Great I think, that’s perfect for my work from anywhere policy and I can attend 30+ hours of Teams/Zoom meetings during the week with no hassle and I’m not confined to the freezing UK.
After the flight from hell (described in a post earlier in the week) I arrive at the villa to be faced with a 4G router where speedtests confirm I’m getting 1-2 Mbs and can’t even load Youtube.
Contacted the villa management company who basically told me unplug the 2 cables and plug them back in and it’ll be fine. When I sent them photos of the router with just a power cable and the homepage displaying 4G they went into defensive lying mode and told me it was the wind. (guys… I’ve been working in IT for 33 years and I designed and built an ADLS network… don’t try and pass off 4G as ADSL).
Anyway to cut this farce short, Marritott H&V isn’t really much to do with Marriott at all, it’s a brand overlay for a bunch of villa management companies in various parts of the world. Go look at the Reddit thread, it’s not pretty reading.
After 5 days of arguing, and MHV siding with the management company’s wind/storm story (it’s been gorgeous all week apart from rain last night) they gave me 20k points to shut up and go away and to cover the cost of the 5G data bundle I needed to get me though the week.
We’ll see in time whether they amend the listing, I’ll be checking up in a week or so.
I planned to use the Amex credit offer for Marriott Homes & Villas and searched quite a few properties for a trip I’m taking next May. In the end, I found the same property on booking dot com and it was cheaper than the Marriott price, even after the £150 discount. I also read some comments that aligned with my experience – that their prices aren’t very competitive.
Was the same price as B.com and it was so cheap on both I had to add an extra day to get over the 500 so I came out ok.
Fair play to MHV, I just checked and they’ve fixed the listing. Mistakes happen, the management company have 91 properties according to b.com’s listing. But hey, own your mistake and apologise, don’t lie and tell me it’s the weather.
If it wasn’t for the lack of the ADSL and lack of an oven I would be spending several winter weeks a year in this place. It’s brand new this year, not overlooked, virtually no traffic or other noise and the family living in the adjoining house are really quiet locals with well behaved kids. Barely heard a peep.
One day I’ll find the perfect one 🙂
