This is my primary card but I don’t think that I am getting enough value out of it. I’d consider keeping it longer if they give me a good retention offer. Does anyone have any recent experience with cancelling their Marriott card? Is it better to call/get in touch via chat? And should I specifically ask for a retention?
I’ve been a loyal cardholder for 6 years and I’m currently holding 3 cards. 90% of my spending goes through my Marriott card (50k last year, it’s been my primary card for 2 years).
I’ve not held the card as long as you, but I’ve held it twice, the first time for a sustained number of years (as the Starwood card and then Bonvoy). I was offered nothing both times I threatened to cancel, so I cancelled.
This card is my mainstay so I never bargained with it, but pre-pandemic a friend of mine was able to get a 3points per £ for, I believe, six months as a retention offer. This was the original earning rate of the card and a lot of people kept that rate for a bit if they applied for the old SPG card before the switch.
Does this card trigger the free night immediately upon reaching the spend target, or do you need to wait for a renewal of the membership?

It arrives within a few days of triggering it, not after the next year
