Hello fellow frequent flyers
I stupidly forgot to downgrade my Virgin rewards credit card account from the £160 a year card to the free card, and they won’t refund me as I’ve made a few purchases on the card since they charged me the fee for the upcoming card year.
I therefore have this for another year. Very annoyed as I feel this is a big waste of money given the recent changes they’ve made. Are there any people here who have decided to keep the paid card despite these changes and have any positive points to share to make me feel better about it?!
I already have two reward vouchers which I’m not sure how I’ll use, no idea what I’ll do with a third!
There there don’t worry! 😀
But do calendarise a reminder at the appropriate date to cancel before the next renewal.
Depends how much flexibility you have to travel. You can get UC for as low as 29k points on some dates now, so it’s not bad news for everyone.
Last week I flew UC on the very lovely A330-900, MAN-MCO, for 2 of us it cost a total of 21k points, plus £864, plus the upgrade voucher.
Again it really depends on your circumstances. I’m keeping the card for now!
It’s done, it’s done.
Use the card and transfer the points to Hilton 🙂
I have the opposite issue! I downgraded last year after c6 years of +card – upon downgrade, they gave me a new voucher (in error, of course)
I tried over the past few months to UPgrade using the app and after 2-3 days, they reject me every time! I thought it had worked this week because for some inexplicable reason, I was given yet another erroneous voucher! Anyway, no…they rejected me!
There are saver seats out there but you will need to be flexible to make best use of your points and vouchers. A couple of weeks ago I booked London to San Francisco and then return from Seattle to London for 2 adults in November in UC at a cost of 95k points and 2 credit card vouchers (I’m red level) plus taxes. I hadn’t realised you can use 2 vouchers on a single booking. There were a number of saver seats to San Francisco at the time but getting the return was quite difficult. I found a couple but had to be flexible to get them. The Virgin call centre agent was super helpful in going through all the permutations.
Lots of saver to the US west coast around Xmas, Jan time. Just got SFO return for 94000 miles. Out Xmas day, back 4th Jan. onwards from there to Maui on DL. Use of voucher halved the points price. Lots of good options you need to be flexible with dates that’s all.
I cancelled mine in response to the issues, but have sheepishly gotten it again – purely with the route out to Hilton it’s worth the £160 to me and if I can then use the points for flights that’s a bonus. Plus, with Nationwide at the helm I’m interested to see where the card goes – they don’t exactly have a history of running reward cards.
When I downgraded they gave me a pro-rata refund which was a total surprise but took away my voucher and increased the required spend to £20k.

What was the breakdown of this, if you don’t mind me asking. How did you achieve this?
Booked PE for 10.5k points each, then called Virgin to upgrade to UC using the credit card voucher and paying the difference in the taxes.
I think we lucked out in that saver seats appeared on a date which worked for us.

Thanks!
So the c/c voucher worked for 2 x return flights?
