Sounds to me like collusion between baggage handlers in London and Edinburgh.
Ridiculous thing to say without any evidence whatsoever.
Other than the evidence it was removed from the plane, taken to the loading area for the carousels, then apparently put on another plane to Edinburgh and then spirited away. Hard to explain otherwise.

And iberia have no knowledge of whereabouts!
Update as of tonight, the bike(airtag) is enroute from ST Andrews University halls(where its been all afternoon ) to Glasgow.
I’m fearing the worst
High jacking this thread. If you book an Iberia flight with BA and flight is operated by Finnair who deals with a lost item possibly left on the plane? I have been in contact with smarte carte , in person at Madrid airport followed up with an email but nothing. Is it worth also trying Finn air? It’s an expensive necklace of huge sentimental value which I lost at either T5 on the plane or at Madrid airport. Was not the best start to my holiday or 2024. Think it probably fell off when I was taking off my Xmas present of a tumi crossbody bag which of course I now hate!
How long will the AirTag remain active?
Battery will be good for at least 2 yrs.
My bike is currently in Glasgow parked up for the evening in what looks like a nice residential setting.
Why can’t the police just go and get it, or am I missing something?

Unfortunately as wrong as this act against @kiley is, there are probably more pressing issues to deal with in the city of Glasgow.
Entertaining story, and I appreciate extremely frustrating for you @kiley. But might I suggest a counterfactual which might offer you some reassurance?
Theft of airline luggage is very rare. There is, however, plenty than can go wrong in the lost luggage process. It is quite possible that your box got confused at Heathrow, and someone accidentally attached a (wrong) label to it to ship to someone else whose luggage has been lost. St Andrew’s Uni students are a very global population – lost luggage there is very common. Hence it being flown to Edinburgh, hanging around a warehouse for a bit and being delivered to St Andrews.
On receipt of your box (or when they got back to their halls after a day of uni), they’ll have said ‘what is this – it isn’t mine’, and then another courier will have been called to come back and get it. This may mean its current location in Glasgow is en route to a large worldcargo centre somewhere, where you’ll eventually have to get Iberia to find it. That will be the hard bit – finding a person at Iberia you can speak to and tell where it has ended up.
Or it may be a thieving toe rag. But if they were clever enough to know what they were stealing, they’d probably be clever enough to be alert for an AirTag.
Do keep us updated and I hope you are insured!
Thanks Pedro, your explanation sounds possible and reasonable.
This mornings bike tracking update.
It left Glasgow this morning back to Edinburgh Airport. After about 30 minutes it left Edinburgh Airport west on A89 and is now back( it was at this address on Thursday) at the sketchy lookimg industrial estate behind/adjacent amerian golf.
Iberia still have no idea where it is.
Yes all items insured. Nationwide flex plus global travel insurance were very quick to remind me that they dont insure bikes as part of clause 11. I was just as a quick to remind them there is considerable value in just the box and the other tri equipment which is covered.
My house insurance covers my bike away from home. There were a couple of irreplaceable items ( ironman event memorabilia) which is annoying.
Just a quick thought, without going into extensive details give American Golf and ask if the building behind is used for lost luggage? They can only say no. Also, it might take a while but I have a few mates that work at Edinburgh Airport, I might be able to get one to nip there and find out? No promises and I’d need an exact location? I’m on FT with the same username if you want to PM me.
I have not been as invested in a Headforpoints post since LondonTravels sought advice in wooing his now special lady friend.
Please tell us how this ends!
(I do love a happy ending.)
Indeed, this would make a good HFP article!

You live up there, you can reunite them Froggee! 💪🚴

Please don’t!
We’ll have nighmares about a Cilla Black Blind Date / Surprise Surprise crossover show.
And no one want’s that.
Lunchtime update
Iberia still do not know where it is!
Tag is pinging back at Edinburgh Airport.
My thoughts now are that it’s not stolen, but if it is, it’s part of a larger luggage theft OCG. Which I’m about to bust wide open 🤣
How exciting. It appears that this is most likely going to go one of two ways.
If it gets put on a plane to Heathrow then you may well be reunited fairly soon.
If it ends up in a warehouse of doom at Ingleston (near Edinburgh Airport) then you may very well have a problem as stuff can sit there for weeks.
Just called iberia again to tell them its at Edinburgh airport.
Data point: u get far better service speaking Spanish!
Iberia have still not located the bag. It feels like they are reluctant to actively search for this item and are taking the passive approach of “wait until it turns up”
I’m going to start replacing some equipment as I need specific items to re start training after my post race rest.
I have a spare bike set up, but do need swimming gear, compression socks, trainers and heart rate monitor.which I’m guessing iberia are on the hook to refund me for.
The “warehouse by American golf” is the one I was describing and is part of BA’s lost luggage setup at Edinburgh. Fingers crossed you’ll get your bike back soon.
Hercule Poirot is heading to the coordinates as we speak. Unfortunately, we will have to wait for the next episode for an update. This is because Arthur Hastings (aka Strickers) is off to sleep.
@pedro seems to be the only one on the money here. Good to have a new poster to provide some sense.
It’s too early to be sure, but all the stories about theft, including the ridiculous idea of collusion between baggage handlers at LHR and EDI made zero sense given the evidence so far. As ever, the cock up is infinitely more likely than the conspiracy.

I always read your post which are factual and to the point.
But please remember it was iberia who initially advised me to call the police when I informed them the luggage had left the airport on Thursday.Iberia’s view at that time was is isn’t possible for baggage to leave the airport without thier knowledge. They suspected the luggage had been removed surreptitiously.
On balance, and with today’s information, it does feel more like a cock up than a theft. But still a very interesting story for my grand kids (or the national press) and some very interesting airtag data.
Fingers crossed my bag makes it on the 8pm flight to LHR 7pm flight tonight. But I’m not holding my breath.

It’s so sweet that you think people colluding to commit theft is ridiculous. Perhaps I’m a little jaded, but in my business this is commonplace.

Please share details of these tags. Are they Samsung so will talk to Android app? Also would their signal be detectable from inside a bike frame or must they avoid being surrounded by metal.

I’m sure ypu can google samsung airtags. But in summary, they are circa 30ft accurate and ping off any samasung phone with Bluetooth on, (without the device holder knowing) an encrypted msg back to my samsung smart things app.
I can also use the app as a type of radar, if I’m within 30ft and can ask the tag to ring to make detection easier. They are about the size of a small key fob and the battery should last 2yrs.
In hindsight maybe the apple airtags would be better as there are more iphones in use (in this country) than samsung devices.
My tag is located in the bike box, they should work inside the carbon frame, but might not be optimal.
Currently I have mixed views. The tag reassured me that my bike was on the aircrafts during my travels, and arrived at the right destination.
Despite having to wait 2hrs in Madrid for the oversize bagges to arrive, I was relaxed as I could see the airtag ping 20ft from the baggage collection area.
But once the bag was declared “missing” by iberia in london I’ve found an odd compulsion to follow my tag wherever it goes. My screen time over the last 3days has reach astronomical levels.
I love technology, and these are great bits of kit, I’m sure they would be a clear boon if you are already in knowledge your bag (for whatever reason) never made it onto the aircraft. It would save hrs of fingers crossed watching the black flaps of carousel of dreams and subsequent waiting in the queue of doom.
Tag update. Its still at Edinburgh!
