Evening All, I have received a cheque denominated in EUR. HSBC advised it impose a £28 fee to clear the cheque

I also have a starling account but starling will not accept non gbp cheques.

Looking for any suggestions for clearing the cheque in uk with minimal cost.

Unfortunately my EUR current account in Ireland was recently closed when KBC exited the market.

Can you try opening a N26 EUR account in Ireland? Using some kind of address proof from there if needed. Assuming they accept cheques.

What amount is this cheque for? £28 is quite high. The cost of the sender having a EUR bank draft issued and sent to you would likely be lower. Or a transfer. Not too late to rip up the cheque via mutual agreement and find an alternative

Yep – I think the price is the price. I believe it is only the proper clearing banks that will be willing/able to do this for existing account holders on a take it or leave it basis.

Given that you aren’t going to shop around for a new bank account based upon their fees for negotiating a foreign check, I think you just need to suck it up if whoever issued the cheque to you can’t transfer money in another manner.

I went with N26 when Ulster bank pulled out and I just checked the app – they don’t support cheques I’m afraid. Nor do Revolut. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a cheque IRL, but are you able to get someone you trust in Ireland to cash it in for you and send you the money? If it doesn’t say “account payee only” or similar, I ‘m pretty sure that is allowed

Thanks everyone for the replies, it’s a cheque for e100 from KBC which I wasn’t expecting.

They have transferred funds to me electronically a few months ago when closing my accounts so they could ask that they cancel the cheque and wire funds to me. If not it’s suck up the charge and move on.

Unfortunately the cheque is crossed with “account payee only”.

The longshot is that i have a credit union account in Ireland from childhood, i’ve emailed them to check if they could accept it

That is frustrating about the account payee only – good luck with the credit union, I’m sure they will do their best to help

The credit union did sort me out. I called beforehand instructed to bring some documents to remove the likely dormant status on my account. Once they were happy with docs they accepted the cheque and what was even more surprising was the balance on my account was significantly higher than I thought. I know this is a UK based forum but credit unions are a real asset especially in rural Ireland which banks have long abandoned

Appreciate all the helpful replies on this.
