Looking for some advice. Flights booked with KLM in Sep to AUH with a connection in AMS were cancelled – I fortunately logged in to check as they had sent no notification. Its an economy saver fare, we had paid extra for a single suitcase. I telephoned their customer services to ask about rebooking and have been rebooked with the first leg on KLM and the second on Etihad, with the reverse on return. The agent was adamant that she could not book any luggage for me as she couldn’t access Etihads system. I tried to HUACA, but was advised the same.
I asked whether KLM would compensate me the at airport price of an additional bag – was told I could file a complaint but there was no guarantee this would lead anywhere. They have apparently refunded my baggage fee, though I’ve yet to receive this.
Is there any way for me to book luggage for these flights before arriving at the airport? Alternatively, would anyone know how to find out what the at airport cost of a bag might be – I imagine its pretty steep?
Thanks in advance
Have you looked at the Etihad website for bag fees?
And if you have been rebooked on to Etihad you should have their booking reference to allow you to manage the booking which would include paying bag fees.
Sorry should have mentioned – have tried the booking reference on both KLM and Etihad websites – both allow me to ‘manage’ the booking, but neither allow me to add any luggage, referring me to the booking agent (which is KLM – flights were booked direct).
Etihad’s website doesn’t seem to have a list of fees for at airport baggage, the best I can find is a Tripadvisor user complaining of being charged $400 USD!
Just trying to think out of box here – maybe try and fly with hand luggage only? You can buy a lot of stuff in AUH for 400$.
It may come to that – we’re travelling with 2 young children so there’s a limit to how much we can leave at home. Etihad’s hand luggage policy is also pretty restrictive…

If you look on Etihad’s baggage allowance pages it does tell you all these things, but you will need to find out what type of fare bucket/ticket KLM has booked you into. Etihad’s economy sale fares allow a 20kg case but they do have HBO fares which KLM could have booked. Excess/extra bag is expensive at US$30/kg.
Thanks I did see this but assumed this would be for additional weight over and above a standard 23kg bag. Perhaps not. But frustrating that there is no way to book luggage prior to the airport. Looks like hand luggage it is…we do some to be booked on a HBO fare

There is a button to book luggage on the Etihad site, but you may need to get the Etihad PNR from KLM if the one you have doesn’t work
