Forums Hotel loyalty schemes IHG One Rewards Kimpton Angler’s Hotel Miami

  • 7 posts

We have 2 nights pre then 2 nights post cruise in Miami in June and have the first 2 nights booked at the above, but not through IHG. I have just realised though that I can buy enough points with a 90% bonus for $640 which makes it a very good deal for the 4 nights, assuming the hotel is decent of course. Has anyone stayed here or any of the other Kimpton Hotels at Miami Beach and can share their thoughts? It’s our first time in Miami.
    TIA

Possibly my worst booking faux pas of late was arranging 2 rooms at this hotel last March without checking what was on in the area – doh, Spring Break and a major music festival. My (younger) traveling companion took up one of the rooms and I stayed in the Kimpton EPIC. Needless to say, news reports of shootings directly outside the hotel & road blockages confirmed my choice to stay away (won’t be a problem in June, of course !) I wasn’t that impressed with the EPIC – felt very impersonal unlike most Kimptons but there was the added bonus of a WholeFoods two blocks away.

Hmm, the shootings (and multiple serious and fatal road smashes) were still being reported over Xmas, which convinced us to change our last few days’ stay to Ft Lauderdale. Also Ft Lauderdale was a fraction of the points prices in Miami!

Thanks for the replies, food for thought…

We stayed at this hotel about 5 years ago after Uni ended mid May before girls’ road trip to Key West. We didn’t have car at this point. Hotel is about 2 blocks back from the beach. Excellent location for beach, shops, eating and art deco area. We either walked or used public transport and felt quite safe at the time. The drinks hour with freshly cooked nibbles was good as were rooms and pool. Staff very friendly and helpful.

My daughter spent her Uni days in the US. We learnt in year 1, to avoid going anywhere near the coast at Spring break. As soon as studies finished everyone seemed to vacate campus driving in full cars over night to Texas, Carolinas or Florida. Holidaying once year finished mid May didn’t seem to have the same issues along the coast. June should be fine.

I’ve stayed in Miami Epic and Surfside and they are both excellent properties, more so now that breakfast will be included as Diamond. Points stays will almost always be cheaper but that sounds a great deal, Miami is expensive!

I’ve stayed in the Epic. There’s not touristy stuff in the immediate area. Whole foods. A cinema. Parking is pricey, even in the garages around ($25 overnight). Hotel is modern, rooms are good. Commensurate with their pricing.

The good thing is the recognition as a Diamond Ambassador. I got a room upgrade. You also get free a la carte breakfast for two – choose any main item (even lobster benedict at $30), free flow non alcoholic drinks. There is the Kimpton password too, for a surprise treat. There are two pools, never too crowded. And a rooftop bar that has a decent happy hour. Could be worse. The only downside, of course, is that it is a car ride to get to South Beach.

Thanks again for the replies, I will have a look at The Surfcomber as it gets favourable reviews and the location looks good.

I’m staying at the Surfcomber for three nights next month. I compared all the Miami IHG properties when the points ‘glitch’ last happened, and it seemed the nicest.

I also have an overnight stay at the Intercontinental (after a day trip to the Everglades, before travelling onwards to the Keys in the morning) – I’m a little concerned about the ongoing renovations there…

Would love to hear more about your itinerary, I have had a complete change of heart for our summer holidays. I originally thought about interrailing with our 4 year old but she has a dairy allergy and I am worried about whether this can be catered for when we don’t speak the language. We are now thinking of taking two weeks to explore Miami and the Keys. Have done as a couple a couple of times but not with a 4 year old in tow!

Stayed at the Angler’s for 4 nights in March last year and thought it was great! Good location, friendly staff and nice rooms. Was a nice buzz during the daily “wine hour” as well. It’s located located a couple of blocks away from the ocean drive madness (maybe 5 minutes’ walk), so it was not noisy at night either. Paid ~£200/night and thought that was good value.

If I was going to spend a lot of time on the beach I would probably choose an on-beach property, but those are either more expensive or significantly further away from the action!

The itinerary we’re doing could work if your 4 year old is good with long car journeys!
    – 3 nights staying in Miami Beach to explore and enjoy the city
    – A day in the Everglades and spending the night in downtown Miami
    – Driving down to Key West to stay for 5 nights (a bit long, I know, but Hilton 5 for 4…)
    – Driving back up to Miami airport to fly to Nassau
    – 4 nights in the Bahamas before we fly back home

This sounds wonderful, hadn’t thought about the Bahamas! Thank you!

Just resurrecting this thread to ask about Kimptons in Miami – we have Surfcomber, Palomar, Anglers all in Miami beach area. Any thoughts on these from recent stays would be appreciated.
