Forums Other Flight changes and cancellations help Jetstar cancellation compensation ?

    Hi folks,

We’ve just had our Hobart to Melbourne flight cancelled this morning. We’ve got rebooked on a later flight early evening today thankfully.

Can anyone give me the lowdown on any compensation that may be due as Jetstars T&C aren’t too clear. We’re UK residents holidaying in Oz, and I’m not sure of the protocols.

    Thanks in advance!

Australia offers minimal protection for air travellers and there is no compensation offered. In the event of a cancellation, the airline is required to provide you an alternative within a reasonable (but unspecified) time or a refund. If they fail to offer a reasonable alternative, you may be able to claim the cost of booking it yourself, but you will likely have a fight on your hands as to what constitutes ‘reasonable’.

No chance of any compensation, sorry.

Do you have good insurance for your trip to Australia? I hope so.

Sadly as others have said, in Australia you’re very much on your own. There is nothing like EU/UK261.

I travelled around Australia October to December last year. I used Qantas and Jetstar for internal flights. The flights were full with few empty seats. Most flights had time changes at least once before departure; departures were often delayed after arrival at airport; others were cancelled.

You need to have a plan B. My flight from Alice Springs to Adelaide was cancelled at short notice. I ended up having to take the Greyhound via Coober Pedy. A long but interesting experience! I’m still waiting for a refund for my flight.

I had an Adelaide flight to Sydney cancelled by Jetstar for my wife and I just one hour before boarding last year. There were no other flights I could get on that day with them. I had to get to Sydney to pick up BA flight back to UK so I ended up paying up over $1000 AUD for seats on Qantas. All I got back was the fare I had paid ($330). However, we did get a further voucher for $100 after complaining to Jetstar.

Thanks for the feedback guys, as mentioned we got rebooked to MEL later that day, so all panned out without any stress.
