Landing into NRT / Tokyo, for 5 days.
Any recommendations for SIM card at airport / or e-SIM I can get before? Thanks

For e-sim I have used Airalo there and it always worked fine. You can download everything and get it ready before you fly and it will activate when you are there.

I have used Airolo in the US. Not used it in Japan before, but will definitely use it on my next trip. (I used to rent pocket Wifi)

They are currently selling 10Gb for 30 days for 9USD.

    – as far as I can see, I can buy the eSim now to use in 6 months time?

A sort of related question. When you rent the pocket wifi does it give you text and calls on your normal number or is it data only like an eSIM?

Data only. It’s just a wifi hotspot.

If you only need data, I find Airalo to be easiest for Japan.

When I’ve needed to call or text within Japan, I’ve found a Voxi sim (Vodafone’s low-cost PAYG network) with global roaming add on to work well. It’s not a huge allowance of minutes, texts, and data, but one of the few that affords not only calls/texts back to UK, but also within country you’re travelling in (such as Japan).

Two important things to note: 1) you would need to get the Voxi sim in the UK before you travel and 2) while you’d be able to call/text Japan numbers at no extra charge within your allowances, you’d still have a UK phone number, so might not be useful if needing to receive texts from Japanese numbers.

FWIW, I don’t bother with the mobile Wi-Fi or other options at airports in Japan.

    Thanks, that’s good to know.
