Forums Payment cards Other payment cards Is the British Airways Prepaid Mastercard likely to return?

Just wondering if anyone knows if the BA prepaid debit card is ever likely to return?

All I get in my Executive Club app is a message saying “We are making some necessary technical updates…which means we have temporarily paused all new card applications”.

I’m just curious how long those applications have been paused for?

dont bother, its the most useless card ever if there was ever an award for it then this one would win it
i cant even register my newly issued card (post dec-22) and i get the same error message

was it worth the 1,500 avios, prob not but wasnt too hard to hit the target

Yes, agreed it’s one of the most shoddily run cards I’ve ever used. But if you can make it work it’s a relatively easy way to generate 1300 Avios a month.

I think unlikely, BA already had a deal with Amex, deal with Barclays, so there’s plenty of ways of collecting Avios.
They cannot bring that card back as it actually harms their brand, so many issues, limits, lack of customer service who have no idea what’s happening.
They could though create a fully new product but that comes with costs.

    So no, in my opinion.

It was a good concept – having a prepaid card where you could earn avios on everyday spending (even if it was 1 avios every £2 spent) – but poorly executed, with the many issues which plagued it.

I hope it comes back, but I highly doubt it

To be honest, it’s working well for me at present.
There’s the odd time the app needs to be forced stopped (Android) when it won’t show your balance / top up options, but it hasn’t failed in ages.
Not been charged any monthly fees either.

Works in Sainsbury, petrol stations etc. and I can pay my credit card with it, so a few bonus Avios there. All add up for general day to day spends that I would ordinarily use my bank debit card for.
i.e. book a flight for say £400 on my credit card for section 75 etc. protection. Then put £400 on the BA card and pay the credit card. 200 Avios for that.
Maybe a BA Amex would be better, but it works for me.

I could possibly earn more from general shopping with it than some flights under the new earning scheme! 😉

Sainsbury’s accepts Amex and for shops that don’t, the free Barclaycard Avios has a better earning rate. If you are paying off a regular credit card with it, you have take into account the fact that you are forgoing the reward points you would have earned on the initial transaction.

Shoddily run I agree, but I’ve kept the card and use it occasionally despite having an Amex and Barclaycard Avios cards which I use for most transactions. There are occasions when it’s useful including getting Avios for cash withdrawals up to £300 per month, and I also use it when I like the peace of mind from using a prepaid card – which if hacked would mean there is no risk of losing a large sum of money. But as for it returning for new applicants it does seem doubtful.

Last two days, any attempt to top up has been unsuccessful, although payments are fine.
Zeroed the balance now and will probably cancel, although there’s no way of doing so in the app.

Still the same after a week, so either it’s something to do with my bank, an issue their end, or they’ve stopped the card.

Update: the card is being killed off (finally)
