Given the downgrading of Points collection with Virgin, is it worth me doing the following?
I have a one-way flight for 2 people LHR-MIA in February – we paid £790 plus 45,000 points and a Voucher for Premium Economy
They have changed the flight times so I believe I can cancel for free?
The same flight is now being sold for £700 plus 27,000 points total on a Saver Fare (and no Voucher used)
Is it worth the hassle to cancel and rebook?
Thoughts welcome
A flight time change does not automatically allow a free cancellation.. It depends on the length of the change.
You can of course cancel yourself and just pay the cancellation fee and then rebook.
Remember if you don’t plan on flying BS again that those 18k points still have a value with e.g. rail tickets or wine or the other options on virgin red. I’d rather have the benefit of those points rather than VS!
Is it still £70 each to cancel a one-way flight?
Is so, the reduced airfare (saving £90) less the cancellation fee (£140?) would cost me £50 in total – is that correct?
The benefit in points saved would be 18,000 plus the voucher I would save.
……. and by the time they’ve messed up the process, there may be a customer service award too hahaha
You need to answer the question that BA Flyer posed. What’s the difference in flight times?
Cancelling and rebooking can be done quickly by phone if you get a competent agent. If you choose to cancel online it can take typically up to 7 days to get your points back and something between weeks and months to get your cash back depending how stretched the back office is.
I did this recently to save 44k points and around £400. Was charged the old cancellation fee as I booked before the changes.
It was quick and easy via the Swansea call centre, points came back immediately and the money after about 2 weeks (over Xmas which probably slowed it down).
Really pleased I made the effort as we should get another trip from the points saved!

The time change is only an hour or thereabouts so no “free” cancellation.
Ive now been on holiday with them for over 30 minutes so have to question is it worth my sanity in dealing with Virgin anyway.
“on holiday” – oops that should be On HOLD
