I have a quick question about the upgrades available at this hotel. I booked a Club Room with them about 9 months ago and was under the belief that as a Spire AMB I could expect a Junior Suite Opera view as an upgrade as that was the next category shown. However, last week they changed all their categories and added a lot more

As a result, I have been in contact with the hotel and they’re telling me that a club room booking (even the old style before the changes last week) just meant a smallest Classic Room with lounge access and therefore I will only get an upgrade to a Superior Room, however I can pay €250 extra and get a Junior Suite with Opera as a ‘special deal’.

To be honest, I am holding off my reply until I have confirmation whether this has always been true or if it is some sort of new ‘enhancement’ and that I am being fobbed off?

    TIA for any replies!

Historically Club rooms (IIRC) didn’t book into Classic, because these are shocking rooms.

Let’s look at two options here:

1-you can add club access for €150 IIRC at check-in, so it may be worth rebooking into a room category you want without the lounge and adding it later

2-I assumed you knew this, but if you book LeG via Emyr Thomas, our hotel partner, you get free club lounge access. Your booking goes through at Best Flexible Rate, whatever that is.

Cancelling and doing 2) via Emyr may be your best bet if the numbers add up.

    Full list of Emyr benefits:
Upgrade at time of booking from Cosy to Classic room. Upgrade on arrival subject to availability for other categories and attributes.
Daily Buffet breakfast for two guests per bedroom, in private dining room of Club Lounge
Daily access to the Club Lounge (valued at 150EUR per day)
    VIP welcome amenities and letter
Early check-in/late check-out subject to availability
25% discount on rack rate suite from Ambassador Suite upon availability
    Complimentary Wi-Fi

    Hi Rob

    Thank you for the reply.

Yes, I would normally book with Emyr but I had a AMB 241 that I needed to use on this occasion as it was running out.

Just out of interest however, what was the exact policy on upgrades, in your experience, in the old category system? I ask as I am being told what I outlined above has always been the policy.

I think historically this was probably always the hotel policy in theory, if not necessarily in practice. i.e. Club room gave Club access but not necessarily a room upgrade. By in practice I mean that I agree with Rob that they probably never actually put someone booking a club room in a classic roon.

I’m not familiar with the new room categories, but with the old ones there were several categories between Classic and Junior Suite – Superior and Deluxe being two of them. They just may not have shown when you were booking. AMB should get you an upgrade to an “old” Superior room but with Spire as well I would expect them to upgrade you to an “old” Deluxe room.

If you’re a repeat guest, Dace, I wouldn’t be too concerned. If you don’t like what you get then a quick word should make something better materialise.

Any recent trips here on points? Is it worth me paying for Ambassador – anything worthwhile other than the 4pm checkout?
