I did this a few months ago. Here’s the process as I remember it:
1) Log in to the BA website and find your booking
2) Attempt to select seats – at this point, it should show you the Iberia equivalent PNR for your booking
3) Take that PNR to the standalone ‘Manage my booking’ page on the Iberia website, and log in with it
4) You ‘should’ then be able to select seats
5) If this doesn’t work (which was oddly the case for two of my group), ring Iberia. I got through to their UK number in seconds, and they were able to arrange free seat selection for me over the phone using the PNR I gaveSorry to revive this topic but.. I saved this for myself for when the time comes.
I tried this but all I get is “The purchase of extras is not available” in the Iberia app. Not sure why.. not letting me to anything.
@Simey sometimes if you just booked a flight that is way in the future the seat selection is not open yet.
Basically what I will recommend:
1) Get the Iberia ref. code from the BA website (go to select your seat and you will see it)
2) Get the Iberia app and enter their ref. code and your last name. The trip will be added
3) Use the app to select the seats 9sometimes it doesn’t work on the site but does on the app)@Simey sometimes if you just booked a flight that is way in the future the seat selection is not open yet.

I’ve got a few IB flights booked and seat selection varies. On avios bookings via BA, I have no issues selecting seats for free as Silver (AND my economy bookings also show that I can have 2 x 23 kg of luggage on the IB app). You do have to wait until nearer the travel date though if you book a long time out. I have a number of cash flights booked via IB (BA charges more!) where seat selection took a while to appear.
I asked this question last week. Recently booked 241 to Quito on Iberia via BA site. All the blurb says seat selection is available…..but it isn’t!. Other posters suggested it will become available after a month or so. BA phone agents tell me it’s because Iberia are not sure of plane type and won’t allow seat selection until plane type is confirmed.. I’ll wait a few weeks and try again.
I’m still confused by IB seat selection, though! I booked MAN-MAD 10 months out recently (outbound with avios via BA and inbound for cash via IB) and could select seats straight away on both legs. Yet I have other, earlier, cash bookings via IB where I’m being asked to pay for seat selection, even though I added my IB number at the booking stage.
I’ll be booking a trip to MAD and ACE for next October in the next few weeks, so we’ll see what happens with the seats on those. Cash prices are very cheap 11/12 months out!
@Northernlass, I was just about to ask about the same issue.
I have a booking for next year, BA silver, and I’m being asked to pay to select some seats. (This was also flagged as a warning on the website on BA before transfer to Iberia’s site).
I picked the free seats, but this did confuse me.
Reviving this thread – my flight on the 9th of October still not letting me manage / edit / add extras to it.
At what point do I contact Iberia maybe – or why is this happening?
IB finally seems to have registered my OW status and I can now select seats on most flights for free from the point of booking. The only one still being stubborn is the short hop between MAD and VGO – I can get the seats free on an award booking via BA, but not a cash booking via IB.
@Simey – what status have you got, and what FF number is on your booking?IB finally seems to have registered my OW status and I can now select seats on most flights for free from the point of booking. @Simey – what status have you got, and what FF number is on your booking? It’s just a 2 for 1 booking on Iberia with Avios. Nothing fancy, I do not have status with anyone – I don’t fly that much.
Support on Twitter said 6 months out, but the forum implies it’s less. So not sure why I am still blocking from ANY activity with my booking.
I think the seat selection became ‘live’ about a month after I booked. Able to choose our seats. It seems the plane is an a350 with offset window/aisle. So as we like window seats , and happy not to converse for 12 hrs or so , I’ve booked 2a/4a. However, according to other posters Iberia have a habit of tossing you out of your bagged seats and parking you in others. So keep an eye out for any changes.
Think this is a known issue with Iberia, usually seat selection becomes available closer to the date but it’s unclear exactly when. Just booked an open jaw MAD-SCL EZE-MAD in PE for mid-November with a 2-4-1 and the booking appears on the IB website inputting surname and booking reference but the seat selection section greyed out. I will report in a couple of weeks.
I’ve had a couple of bookings which were made through the BA site but on ibera metal. Usually it allows you to select seats around a month after the booking. In the past when I still wasn’t able to select seats, it was because there was a time change and I needed to call BA to get them to accept the change.
One of the times the BA person said this isn’t an issue and i should still be able to select seats or some other reason to fob me off, but when pushed they did manage to find that there had been a time change and once accepted on the BA system, then seat selection worked on the iberia site. hope that helps!
