I just booked some flights with Iberia using my BAEC number and I can’t choose seats. The booking reference I have is 5 characters rather than 6 so I can’t use it elsewhere. Is there a way around this?

I don’t see how. All it says is seat booking 24 hours before departure. And there’s nothing indicating a different booking reference that I could use with Royal Jordanian.

The emails I get from ‘Iberia Conecta’ have both the Iberia five character PNR, plus the Amadeus one, but if you can’t see both, call and they will provide you with the Amadeus six digit PNR. It’s quite odd that Iberia, as a founder member of Amadeus (unlike BA that already had BABS) still operates with dual PNRs.

Booked iberia j class flight to Santiargo from.madrid using 2 4 1 and avios. Reserved seats on the iberia app instantly.

I’m BA Silver though, not sure if that helped

I’m BA Gold, so it’s not that. Reading FlyerTalk old threads, there’s no consensus but I can’t buy seats either (not that I would) so it looks like I am just too early to pick a seat.

    I gave it a go.

I booked via BA, an Avios 241 Madrid to Guatemala in business for next year on Iberia obviously.

Iberia app recognised the six digit BA booking code, code, took me through to seat selection page.

    Am a lowly Blue.

I have had this plenty of times with Iberia (both from the BA and IB websites).

    – When booking on BA you have 2 booking references the one from BA and the one from IB. You can get the IB one going on MMB to select my seat

    – once you have the IB reference, use the IB website or app to select a seat

    – if you cannot you may have found an issue I had plenty of times where IB doesn’t seem to recognise the BAEC

    – calling IB is useless they simply tell you to wait 24hrs before the flight. They rarely know what BA is at all!

    – however if they do manage to fix it then everything works! So maybe telling them to remove the BAEC code and put it again is the way to go?

    – I found you can easily use the app to change the frequent flyer number (maybe put a different one and then the BAEC number again? … this has worked for me sometimes)

Iberia CS are so idiotic that when I had this issue and called saying as a OW emerald I should be able to select a seat I was told “you cannot buy or select a seat until 24hrs before your flight”. The guy didn’t know what OneWorld or status was.

Had to find out the phone number of IB gold and it was quickly resolved (even if they clearly shouldn’t have to .. they told me to call BA and for them to contact IB next time which feels like way too complicated).

I booked Iberia flights ±350 days ahead (or whatever the day of release is for Iberia). I’m also BA Gold, but it was at least a month before the ability to book seats became available. I can’t remember the exact period of time – but I kept checking each day and, eventually, the option appeared.
Not sure how far out you’re booking but, possibly, this is the reason

I think this is it. It’s for August next year.

We just booked the £750 DUS to LIM in J return fare that came up a few hours ago, this was booked on the LATAM website but I have IB flight codes DUS-MAD-DUS, LA flight codes MAD-LIM-MAD and I can’t reserve seats on either IB or LA’s MMB, does anyone know who to call about seat reservations in this case? Or if there is a way to get a seat res without having to call? Not really looking forward to speaking to either airlines with their customer service reputations!

The answer is as @Reeferman describes: availability only appears some time after booking if you book far in advance. Currently I can choose outbound, but not inbound. I expect they will appear in a couple of weeks. Bit odd, but I have full choice of the entire cabin so waiting is hardly a hardship.

I’m going round in circles! Just booked on the BA site Madrid to Quito on Iberia using 241 for next year.
Via Iberia app, website or BA site can’t book our seats . As Gold , shouldn’t I be able to? I have the BA booking no. And the Iberia number . neither will access the seats.
I’ve read all the various workarounds mentioned and trawled HfP. Where am I going wrong? Do I need to phone up? Am I being too impatient?

By the way, the Iberia site won’t save all our info such as contact. passport etc and I’ve no idea where to locate the FFnumber!

Iberia often doesn’t have a seating plan available to select seats until a month or two after seats go on sale

The ability to book seats doesn’t appear for a while, especially if your booking is some months away. I think this is regardless of status, as this is what I found when booking MAD-LIM a few months ago at just under a year out. With regard to the Iberia app not saving your details yes that’s an issue too. I emailed IB CS and they updated it for me within a few days

Thanks for that both of you. You’d think that Iberia/ Spanish lot would be a bit more sophisticated. Not all doom and gloom at BA!!

All sounds odd. I booked MAD-NRT through JAL for next July and was offered seat selection before I even got to the payment page. Such a reassurance that all these airline’s systems don’t seem capable of talking to each other, until they can, of course…

Oh that’s interesting. My booking was via the BA website. It was a reward booking (though not with a 241) and I was reassured by some helpful HfPers that this made no difference and seat selection would eventually appear, and indeed it did about a month later. It all seems a bit random sometimes!

These systems do all talk to each other! Even Amadeus vs Sabre airlines. They are highly interconnected and use common agreed IATA protocols/language, accept each others’ FF numbers, service codes, e-tickets etc. which is one of the many reasons any ‘big bang’ solution to start any airline’s IT system afresh is additionally complicated. The issue referenced in this thread is simply that Iberia doesn’t always publish its seating plans at the same time as it opens flights for booking. Similarly, some airlines allow you to select seats during the booking process and others require you to select it after completion of your booking.
