Iberia – AA, reward flight booking value of Avios used for booking not flown

Last December I couldn’t take a non refundable Avios reward flight, booked on Iberia, operated by American Airlines.

My travel insurance, instead of considering value of Avios when purchasing, wants to know what the value of the circa 39000 Avios would have been, given the cash cost of the flight.

Now American Airlines said they cannot give me the price of the flight, for the date when I booked it, which was one way, directly before Xmas, so I think would have been rather expensive.

They can only give me a current price for current date, which I guess is far less than booking with 8 days notice before Xmas.

With Iberia it is not possible to request such information online and their agents on the phone say they cannot provide such letter either.

Any idea how I can find out? Thank you.

What was the route and what cabin was the booking for? 39,000 Avios is worth £624 at 1.6p per Avios to purchase or half that if converted to Nectar points. Don’t forget that there is also potentially Taxes Fees and carrier charges in addition to the Avios that should be included in your costing.

I would look at what a one way fare would cost for the same date in Dec 2022. If anything it might be more expensive than what it was last December

Google Flights do historical pricing on every route by date and month, but not sure it goes that far, think it goes only 60 days before. However, they do display a typical price range for the date. So if you look for Dec 2022, it will show you the historical range.
