Having recently stayed at the Hyatt Regency Churchill London as a WoH Globalist I was very surprised to be charged a discretionary 5% extra on top of my bill. This seems like a very sharp (if not illegal practice). Have not seen this practice in the UK before.
Upon query at checkout the charge was immediately removed from my bill. When challenged what the “service charge” was for, the surprising response was to “pay the staff”!
This “optional service charge” was not notified at time of booking, however it is included in the reservation confirmation email. (See below).
Suffice to say I will not be staying in this hotel again!

PLEASE NOTE THAT A DISCRETIONARY SERVICE CHARGE OF 5% WILL BE ADDED TO YOUR ACCOMMODATION BILL.”They now say they tack this on at the Liverpool Street Andaz, too, but last time I was there it didn’t appear on the bill. Doesn’t sit well with me.
