How long before the stay did you have to cancel? I know it’s the day before or the actual date of stay with many hotels but I’ve noticed a few where it can be up to 3 weeks before the check in date (and threaten to charge the cash rate of the stay to your room if you cancel after that or don’t turn up!)
I’ve found that when I cancel close to the deadline points take longer to come back. Contacting IHG tends to sort it, if you’re in a hurry
