Forums Payment cards Barclaycard Avios How best to use upgrade voucher to New York

  • 43 posts

    Hi guys

I need to book a flight to NYC flying out on the 4th/5th April and coming back on the 7th. I have an upgrade voucher and was thinking of going business on the way there and premium economy on the way back. I assume this can be done if I call them? Given the route and the timings is there any other way to maximise the points and lower the fees etc apart from just your bog standard LHR to JFK route and paying c90k points and £300 odd for fees?

I’m pretty sure both legs have to be in the same cabin. If there are two of you, you can upgrade both of you on the way out. I think you’d need to book the outbound and return separately, which is not a problem. But if it’s only you then I don’t think you can do it.

You can mix cabins using the upgrade voucher, but yes you’ll need to call.

You have to use the maximum avios anyway with the Barclays voucher, so there’s no way of changing the amount of avios/cash you use.

Don’t forget there’s a morning flight back from JFK, which gives better value in terms of enjoying the experience, if you can find award seats! (Likely on that route, although fewer PE are released than Y and J).

I have to take a night flight back unfortunately. It seems the taxes have changed and are now more like £450 plus rather than £300 – is that normal? Or am I searching wrong?

I think it used to be £350 in J return but went up recently – though not by as much as you’re being quoted. What’s the exact pricing you’re getting?
