Forums Payment cards American Express Holding no Amex credit cards – any issues?

  • 54 posts

Now I’ve got the Avios plus Barclaycard I’m thinking of cancelling my BAPP so both me and husband will be ‘on a break’ from BAPP for the required 48 months at the same time. We have 3 x 241 vouchers to use until end of 2024 but I still have my Amex platinum charge card to pay for taxes, etc when we use those.

Have I overlooked anything by cancelling the BAPP and being Amex credit card free entirely in the household? As it feels very odd for neither of us to have a BA Amex card at all – First time for years!

48 months? Do you mean 24 months each at the same time?

I assume there is a reason you prefer to keep the charge card instead of a cheaper card? Your current strategy prevents you qualifying for the plat bonus again in 24 months. Personally I am keeping either the nectar, marriott or cashback card (depending on what points I want to collect) during my ‘break’.

You should be fine with the charge card, I have definitely used it to pay the surcharges on a 241 booking (unless they do change the rules in the meantime, but I think BA have other things to worry about at the moment). I’m also on a 2 year break but have supplementary cards so it’s not as odd as it might be, but I know what you mean!

*Just read @Reney’s comment, but also if your husband has no personal Amexes whatsoever for 2 years he could apply for the Marriott/Bonvoy card at the end of that and get the SUB before getting the BAPP again.

Sorry, yes, I meant 24 months each! I think my brain must have added them together!

We’re actually using most of the charge card benefits at the moment (travel insurance, airport lounges, cash back offers) so that one is working for us at the moment…but as soon as that changes I’ll look at the other cards for sure – thanks!

Thanks @NorthernLass for the tip about the Marriott Bonvoy card – not had that card before but since coming away from IHG we have been looking for new ‘preference’ hotel chain and after staying in the Cotton House Hotel in Barcelona at the beginning of this month, MB could fit the bill!
