Forums Payment cards Other payment cards Help please on pre-authorisations using Curve

Used my Curve card on a cruise ( charging in US dollars on card).
It appears cruise pre- authorise your card each night items charged.
On looking at my underlying card – the preauthorisations are no longer pending and have been charged to the card.
Cruise company telling me they are going to charge the full amount in a few days but I have already been charged over £5000 on my underlying credit card.

Does anyone know how this works? Obviously I do not want to be charged another £5000.

I had not appreciated how Curve works on pre- authorisations.

Thank for any help in advance.

Curve is a debit card so, in exactly the same way as any other debit card, cannot manage pre-authorisations – your card is charged. It’s not a Curve specific issue, debit cards simply don’t have the facility to place a hold or block a sum of money. This is also why most car hire companies require a credit card for pre-authorisations and don’t accept debit cards for the security hold.

What might be possible in these circumstances is to put the hold on a credit card (that may attract FX fees) but then pay the final bill on Curve if the cruise line allows that like a hotel would.

Curve should (will) automatically refund the charges but only after the cruise company releases the hold so you will be charged twice for 3-7 days.

    Thanks for that 😀
