Forums Payment cards American Express Help please – keeping Amex BAPP voucher after cancelling card

  • 30 posts

My husband has just spent an hour on the chat to Amex as we cannot get through to the phone line.
He asked to cancel his BA Premium Plus Card today (his next year starts 8 Feb) as we already have the Companion ticket triggered and sitting in his BA account.

The chat man said that if we cancel the card, we might lose the Companion ticket as the fees MUST be paid by the card that the 2-4-1 was achieved on.

I have a BA Premium Plus card (with my husband as the supplementary card holder) that we are now using to get a 2-4-1 in my name by July 2022 and we were going to book flights using my husband’s 2-4-1 that’s sitting in his account, in January 2022 for the following January 2023 to S Africa using his supplementary card that is on my BAPP. We obviously need the spend on my card and we were going to give him a 2 year wait until he gets the next one.

Am I correct that we can do this using his 2-4-1 gained on his BAPP, but using his supplementary card for my BAPP?
We don’t spend enough for more than one 2-4-1 per year as we are retired.
The man at British Airways told me that as long as it’s in my husband’s name, it doesn’t matter, but the AMEX man is saying it does matter.

Thank you for your help 🙂

Amex are lying. They’ve been reeling this same line out for years.

Any Amex card, his, yours, a friend’s, can be used to pay for a 241 booking.

My wife has just used her 241 voucher and she paid using her Supp card on my BAPP account. No issues.

You won’t have the voucher taken from your account after you close it.

You can pay the taxes with ANY Amex in anyones name because they don’t check that.

Just say ok no problem and insist they close the card.

Perhaps one for a sticky because I imagine this will come up again and again.

All the above, however also if you end up making a phone booking with BA, don’t mention that you’re not using the card which triggered the voucher as some CSAs will say they can’t accept it (I’m looking at you, YouFirst!), when this is completely inaccurate.

Thank you everyone! We will ring them (if we can ever get through) and cancel it 🙂
