Hi All, I assume the answer to this will be that the hotel is franchised (or similar) but I have stayed at Hilton Garden Inn Doncaster and been told that I do not get breakfast included as a gold member. Is this as I said above due to the hotel being franchised and not wanting to offer all benefits for some reason? Or was I swindled?! 🙂
Pretty much all chain hotels are franchised!
From the Hilton Honors T&Cs:
Complimentary Breakfast (Non-U.S. hotels only)
Daily complimentary breakfast is available either as a Member Benefit (at Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts, LXR Hotels & Resorts, Conrad Hotels & Resorts, Canopy by Hilton, Curio Collection by Hilton, Hilton Hotels & Resorts, Hilton Garden Inn, DoubleTree by Hilton, Signia by Hilton, and Tapestry Collection by Hilton properties located outside of the U.S. or as a brand amenity, excluding Hilton Grand Vacations.
When selected as a MyWay Benefit by a Gold or Diamond Member, daily complimentary continental breakfast is provided for the Member and up to one additional guest registered to the same room each day of Member’s stay at hotels located outside of the United States. The complimentary breakfast applies to the one guest room in which the Elite member is staying. Breakfast is only served in the hotel’s designated restaurant or Executive Lounge. At the discretion of the hotel or where breakfast is a brand amenity, the hotel may provide full breakfast or in-room service. Complimentary continental breakfast is not available as a MyWay Benefit at hotels in the U.S.
Swindled. Complain to the hotel and then to Hilton.
Have you checked what your “my way” benefits are for that brand?

You can choose between a free breakfast of 750 points.
If you didn’t get either, lodge a complaint with Hilton corporate, and as for compensation.
“Free breakfast of 750 points” doesn’t sound too appetising 😂. But yes, check that your My Way benefit is set to what you want it to be. I would have shown the hotel employee my HH app and asked why this wasn’t being honoured (as it were!)

Annoyed that I didn’t check this first. I was set to get points not breakfast as my ‘my way’ benefit.
I have updated to breakfast so let’s see what happens on my next stay.
The odd thing is, I did speak to the front desk to ask about the breakfast but was just told I wasn’t eligible and even called the helpline who also confirmed I wasn’t going to get breakfast.
Thanks to all who replied!
If your myway benefit was set to points before you checked in then it won’t show as eligible to the hotel. You’ll see the points on your folio after checkout
That hotel is a stickler for the rules – most Hiltons will just give you the breakfast anyway
On the plus side they don’t charge for parking despite the app/website saying they do, not sure if gold/ diamond only or everyone
Another annoying trick is when they ask you to sign a charge for breakfast. And neither the breakfast people nor the front desk will commit to its being free.
It seems to be a case of ‘if you’re entitled to free breakfast, it’ll be adjusted on checkout’. And how much would you like to tip, sir? You have to be very sure of yourself sometimes!
When they were still doing free breakfast in America, we were given a bill just for the tip at one HGI. I wouldn’t have minded so much, but it was a buffet and all the server did was put a pot of coffee on the table!

No one was ‘swindled’.
The hotel provided the benefits it was required to provide based on the choices made by the guest.
I stayed at that hotel last year to hit one more night to keep my gold as it’s up the road from where w live. As a family of three we were given free breakfast. However on checking in the staff did say did I want my want my way benefits to be points or breakfast….i had no idea that brand was the only one it defaulted to points on my app?! Good job they asked me!
Obviously I asked for breakfast. Think it’s clearly a training issue re entitlements

Almost a hundred nights stayed at HGI Doncaster. They are normally very good if you have points set and not breakfast and even at the entrance to the restaurant, they will get reception to change it from points to breakfast. A quick word with the Duty Manager would have sorted it and I have always found the entire team at the hotel to be very accommodating and service focussed.

Technically yes but I’ve never been to a Hilton hotel and they ask me I want breakffast or points. It’s just good customer service and stops backlashes like this going on the internet.
