Forums Other Flight changes and cancellations help Flight cancellation and downgrade

  • 14 posts

Hi im travelling dublin to cancun in june with a transfer in Heathrow. Ba cancelled and rebooked us on a flight that was too short a transfer. I asked to go with Aer ligus direct to lgw as it was more sensible. Ba refused as they only had economy and we were business.
Today, 2 months later i got an email saying that we were now on the aer lingus.
Are we entitled to anything as we are rerouted to a differnt airport with a different carrier plus have been downgraded?

    Thanks

BA is obliged, per Article 8(3), to pay for the cost of the transfer between LGW and LHR but they may insist this is limited to public transport (the legislation doesn’t specify) rather than a taxi. In respect of the downgrade, you are entitled to 30% of the difference for that sector only, so it is unlikely to amount to much.

So you were booked BA DUB-LHR (transfer) LGW – CUN?

Then following a DUB-LHR cancellation you asked for EI DUB-LGW because it was better for the flight to CUN?

And they’ve since given you what you asked for?

I don’t see where a transfer between LHR and LGW comes into it let alone BA paying for it as you’d be doing that and paying for it yourself anyway under your original booking.

Downgrade is less clear as you agreed to it. Plus TBH it’s only going to be a few quid.

Yes, they have now put us on the aer lingus flight which I did ask for 2 months ago and ba rejected. Ba said that we couldn’t take the aer lingus as no buisness class was available and changes had to be in the same cabin. That discussion and request was closed by BA.
I did however wonder because of the involuntary downgrade which we have been allocated if we were entitled to anything.

    Thanks for that.

As JDB wrote you could claim 30% of the base fare from the downgraded leg but it’s not going to be very much.

Personally if this was me asking for an airport change that would make my trip easier and the downgrade is only for an hour or so then I’d let it go because (a) I’ve saved the cost of the coach and (b) not had to lug my luggage around two airports.

Others may take a different view to that but then I tend to look at things in toto rather than individual parts.

This appears to be one booking, so I think the downgrade re-imbursement is likely to be 75% rather than 30%, if relevant – I’m not sure anything is due. The rate should be based on the total distance (ie DUB-CUN), and then on the proportion of the journey that was downgraded. So DUB-CUN puts you in to the 75% banding, then LGW-DUB is 5.7% of the total journey in 1 direction.

    Still won’t be much though.

While for compensation purposes, the whole journey counts, for downgrade reimbursement it is per sector – see Interpretative Guidelines D.4.4.11.
