Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points
Hi Folks,
I’m currently in the Intercon Hua Hin, Thailand after visiting Bangkok for 6 nights. We were originally booked to fly BA but we’re swapped to Finnair due to BA cancelling the route. We’re loving it here and I’m now tempted by Vietnam.
We have a fair few Avios to burn and an old 241 voucher to burn but has anyone any advice for the best way to get to Vietnam on business class. It doesn’t need to be a redemption flight, just a good price. We’re really looking at only one layover if possible. Thanks for any advice.
There are direct flights from London on Bamboo Airways and Vietnam Airlines. When I’ve had a brief look their pricing isn’t too bad and their products are OK. Qatar, Cathay Pacific and Malaysian Airlines will be the obvious option with your Avios, otherwise BA to Hong Kong or Singapore and seperate tickets onwards if you could find any seats!
It’s also worth seeing if you could mix and match if you can find Avios availability in one direction- often the Asian carriers have reasonable one way pricing
If I was looking to spend Avios & companion, out and back with BA to HKG, onwards with Cathay or another.
If there’s only outbound availability then Avios to HKG with companion, onwards and then back with some combo of Qatar/Malaysian/Sri Lankan/BA that qualifies for multi carrier pricing. Eg
Booking one (BA & companion)
LHR – HKG
Booking two (multi carrier)
HKG – Hanoi (Cathay)
HCMC – Doha (Qatar)
Doha – LHR (BA or Qatar)
For cash alternatives Sky Scanner or Google Flights, or watch flyer’s talk’s various “bargain” flight threads.
Thanks for your replies. Something we can look into…Cheers folks.
Singapore Airlines can get you there on a single ticket

When I needed to fly to Singapore from Hanoi (I was flying QR from there) I brought a ticket for SQ193 using 12,500 VS points plus about £22-23, a cash ticket for my date if travel was I think around £206, I didn’t fully check the cash fare, but I know straight off that using points was far cheaper
Thanks again for the tips. We’ve booked BA to HKG as a return 241 and then we’ll sort the flights to Da Nang at some point.
Currently loving the InterContinental Hua Hin. Lots of venues in this area haven’t opened post Covid but still plenty to do. It’s good to relax after 6 nights in Bangkok…
