I am holding 2 AMEX card (Platinum and BAPP), recently cancelled a free AMEX card, tried to apply for AMEX Marriot card and was refused.
This was the first time I ever was refused an AMEX card, Mt credit score is almost maximum.Any idea why this happened? I had not used the free AEMX car I had, not even activated it, it was canceled only 2 days ago, as working towards 2for1 on BAPP and after achieving sign-up bonus on AMEX Plat.
How long should I wait before trying to apply again?
Any other suggestions on how to get accepted?- This topic was modified 55 years, 4 months ago by .
Maybe because you just cancelled 2 days prior? I would probably have tried applying first then cancelling the older one after. There is a limit on the number of AMEX cards you can hold at any one time but you are not at that level so can’t be that.
Did you try the eligibility checker?
There are also ones run by the price comparison sites. Different cards can have remarkably different odds of acceptance.

Seems like it’s not overly smart – I just got recommended a BAPP card despite owning one and all the blurbs talk about sign-up bonuses which I thought I was not entitles do since I have an Amex card
Oh it’s not that smart. But it can give a clue if there is a problem. Some of the ones run by the price comparison sites give a percentage chance of success. I’m not going to link to them though as they’ll be dropping cookies trying to get referral credit from the issuers which is a bit anti HFP behaviour.
Another reason why an application may decline is the amount of credit you already have available to spend with that one provider.

If you use the eligibility checker does that affect any referral link /bonus you will use to actually apply? Thanks
Your credit score is completely irrelevant
I have reduced my credit limit with them buy serval thousand £ today and also with 2 other providers, so will give it a try in a few more days or what is the experience of others in regard to waiting times before reapplying again?
It’s worth bearing in mind that your credit files (Experian, Equifax etc) are only updated once every 28 days.
I have a £30k credit limit on my Amex PRG credit card and at least access to a further £30k on my Amex Green charge card, so I don’t expect a successful additional application to Amex anytime soon!

Reducing your limits is a sign to lenders that you can’t handle/cope with the limits you currently have.
You’ll probably find this has done you more harm than good now.

That is an extremely rare scenario and probably would only come in to play if there was a history of struggling to handle/cope with those limits, so I wouldn’t worry too much about that being an issue.

It’s not rare in this case. To suddenly reduce you limits, especially on several cards at once, is not a good sign to lenders.
My wife got rejected for the Marriott card a few years ago – no idea why.

See, it even happens to royalty on the odd occasion. 😀

Not at all. Maybe the application didn’t fit the criteria they were targeting more for that month/period.
There’s much more to lending than just money and “credit scores”.
Amex rejected my application for Amex Nectar a while ago. Resubmit another application for it and it was cancelled by the system. Apparently you can’t apply for the same card in 90 days once rejected.
Oh and I have cancelled Amex gold (still holding BAPP) a few days before applying for the Amex Nectar!

Best to plan early and leave some sufficient gap between such events. I have no idea if it really impacts your profile at Amex, but if I designed a system, that would be a red flag.
