Hard work finding a dealer that will accept anything significant on a credit card, let alone an Amex. Finally I have found Luton Toyota. Max 20k on an Amex. Woo hoo. Bring on my tier points 💪🏻
We bought our last two used cars on Amex and our estate agent opened a PayPal account at his branch so we could pay his fees (linked to Amex account).
Every bit makes a difference..
Nice, was it an outright purchase or deposit for finance?
Amy, did you agree the price before you said you wanted to pay by Amex? Buying a car is a bit like buying a carpet in a Turkish Bazaar. They expect you to negotiate.
I get my car serviced at Steven Eagell. For a couple of years, they wouldn’t accept Amex for the servicing, although they then started accepting it again.
I’m currently looking at the new Yaris Cross. Some dealers are prepared to sell it at 9pc below list price. CarWow is good for getting quotes.
Audi in Milton Keynes (Jardines) allowed a decent chunk via Amex (10k) via 2 seperate cards
And then a similar amount on Barclaycard as wellHow do you know if they didnt charge you more, as opposed to another card (debit) or cash?

Also interested in the Yaris Cross, but would like to see the Lexus LBX first.
I didn’t know you were looking or I could have told you. Andrew and I had discussions on this a few years ago, EasternWestern Group takes amex, lots of dealers covering many car brands too including NMW, Mercedes, Mini, Smart, Nissan, Mazda and more.

Be mindful that Lexus RX are hot cakes to be nicked so I’d be wary if there isn’t an upgrade on the LBX’s security system.
HR Owen takes Amex up to £20k for the big spenders.

Do you know whether EWG have an upper limit on payments on Amex? When I bought my current car they flatly refused payment in full by Amex, or any credit card for that matter.
Funnily enough it’s a Yaris Cross Excel I just bought! It’ll be delivered in June. Up until 3pm yesterday I was buying a 1 year old one outright but then changed my mind after negotiating a good deal based on a Car Wow deal from another dealer.
They changed their policy re Amex on Jan 1st. I put 12k balance of my mum’s new Yaris on my Amex 3 weeks ago and now another 9k for my deposit. I would have put 20k on it had I bought the car outright, the points would have been very welcome.
I have driven a Range Rover for last 4 years that I bought outright but the insurance is a joke and it’s getting to the age it might start costing me in repairs. Therefore I’ve decided try something extremely economical and totally different.
Can’t help but feel I’ve massively downgraded but I’m telling myself off for being a snob and congratulating myself on being sensible.Honestly, @Amy, it’s incredibly liberating not to have to worry about your car! We have had a Mazda SUV for the past 5 years, it’s a gorgeous car with all the whistles and bells but has zero status so is very unlikely to be of interest to thieves. I like it so much I think we’ll get another when we’re ready to exchange, though our mileage is so low given covid then WFH, it’ll be at least another year. Our insurance is about £350.
Incidentally, we used our previous car as the deposit, then took 3 years’ Santander finance, then £12k balloon payment at the end. All payments were made on Visa or MC, earning us a nice chunk of points plus Virgin and Barclays vouchers. Hoping to repeat this with our next purchase!
@NL Before the RR I had a Mazda CX-5 & loved that car. It was sexy looking, well made and gorgeous to drive. I really missed it for a while. Mazda have excellent theft protection too unlike JLS. Toyed with getting another but tempted by the frugality of the Toyota.
Lol, great minds think alike! Got my eye on the CX-60 next. Obviously need the right payment options …

I think it looks fab, @Amy, but to be fair, we’re approaching it from the
other end of the spectrum: a Hyundai i10 which has been fab for tootling round
Cotswolds lane, but gangly child now kneeing me in the back every w/end ;o)Toyota safety also fantastic. Was actually waiting for Hyundai with its 5-yr warranty to
make something similar, but nothing small enough (for us!) yet. Many great payment options: will have to get OH and I in line cards-wise to hopefully
split payment!I didn’t know you were looking or I could have told you. Andrew and I had discussions on this a few years ago, EasternWestern Group takes amex, lots of dealers covering many car brands too including NMW, Mercedes, Mini, Smart, Nissan, Mazda and more.

It was late 2018 so policy may have changed. They took payment at Mercedes (OT: I don’t recommend anybody buy a Merc SUV IME)) in full, and I think it was @Andrew that reported at the time he also paid a VW with amex.
We had a Merc a few years ago, it had the most stupid parking brake you’ve ever seen, you had to fiddle around under the dashboard to switch it on and off! I swore off them after that.
Alphabet Finance, who BMW use, accept Amex, in my recent experience.

Thanks, it was Mercedes in Edinburgh that refused my Amex. Maybe I should have dug my heels in.
@NorthernLass, if you mean the old-style manual, foot-operated parking brake I always really liked those as you couldn’t lock them so tight that release was difficult as you can with a conventional handbrake. The newer electronic ones are well hidden but I think I’ve only used it manually once in seven years and two cars (three cars with my wife’s).
