Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Iam new to this forum and looking for some help / guidance.

My parents are aging and now do not collect Avios so we created a Family account which they contributed almost £100k Avios in Sept 2023.

In middle Dec 2024 I noticed that the family account total was down by almost £100k, I immediately wrote to Avios saying that the Family account was down by almost £100k and suspected this was my parents contribution to our Family Account.

I have received one email from BA in Dec 2024 confirming receipt of my notification of missing Avios, since then I have received two emails confirming that they are looking into this, but no real response.

I have done some digging myself and think this is to do with my parents now not collecting Avios any more and they have take the £100k points back due to an inactive account.

I would appreciate any help on your thoughts and what I should do to have £100k Avios reinstated, thank you.

Avios expire after 3 years of inactivity.

Being in a HHA and I assume that’s what you created rather than adding them as ‘friends ans family’ does not prevent that as long as there has been some actvity such as a redemption since they joined.

If someone else in the HHA has BA status (Bronze and above) then the expiration doesn’t happen.

    See this article

Please don’t add a ‘£’ sign infront of the avios as they aren’t money!

Yes we created a HHA, other parts of the house hold have been adding to the account, but my parents have not, other contributors in the HHA are Blue status, so assume BA have taken the 100k points back.

Do you know if there is anything we could do to have these points reinstated ?

Apologies for the £ sign and thank you for your prompt reply.

You are very unlikely to get them back if they have been correctly removed due to expiry, and you haven’t offered anything yet to suggest otherwise.

If there have been any redemptions by any HHA members that would trigger activity on your parents accounts. You or they need to look at the ‘recent’ transactions on their accounts and confirm whether or not there has been any activity in the last three years.

I’m afraid you may be out of luck

With no one with any status their earning points don’t do anything to the other accounts. What is needed is a redemption activity as that will reset the clock on all the accounts.

I suggest you keep track on the expiry date of all the members accounts to prevent this happening again and you losing even more avios.

Andrew, I am pretty certain that there has not been any redemptions in the last 3 years on our HHA, there has been points collected, but not from my parents, guess this does not count.

Each individual account in a household account needs some activity in 3 years to stop points expiring. Say you had four accounts with activity in a five member account all part of a household account, the 5th inactive account will still lose their points after 3 years inactivity regardless of what the other four do.

Any activity counts not just a redemption. Even collecting one Avios point via the BA e store.

Screwfix used to be a good way to stop exipiry if time was short. The reward always came through within 2 days for me. Sadly screwfix no longer part of the E store. Would be good to know which other retailers do speedy rewards.

It’s quite unusual not to make any redemptions at all in 3 years, though. I think Rob once said that even if you book an avios flight then cancel within 24 hours, it re-sets the clock for all HHA members.
