So easyJet cancelled our flight only 5 hours prior to departure. Have applied for a refund, and just wanted to know if this negates any EU261 claim if we decide not to go with another airline (ie cancel our trip completely)The next flight out with easyJet is on Sunday. Thanks : )

If you claim for a refund then you give up your rights to travel.
If you have already done this you could perhaps try to claim the difference in fares from your travel insurance (depending on your policy terms).

If you still intent to travel you will need to ask the airline to help you without refunding your ticket. Whether they help in the way you want is not guaranteed.

It’s not really practical for the airline to help rebook and pay EU delay compensation if they aren’t earning anything from you (if you refund).

First things first, take a screenshot of the EasyJet website, it shows your flight was cancelled for technical reasons. Taking the refund immediately complicates things, it all depends on what they offered you as an alternative. I’m sure someone will be along soon enough with the legal aspects.

The alternative departure was 24hrs later. This wouldn’t work for us as it was a weekend trip

As ever, it all depends on context and the reason for cancellation and in that regard you can’t rely exclusively on any screenshot; it may well help, but the aircraft planned to operate your flight to Amsterdam at 07.00 left for Corfu at the same time. Whatever ops staff enter into airline systems on the spot will get analysed later. That relates only to potential cancellation compensation as you have rerouting rights whatever the reason.

As it’s a very busy route, you might be able to find an alternative on another airline much earlier than EasyJet’s proposed one 24hrs later, but you need to give EasyJet plenty of opportunity to rebook you on one of those flights (and for them to refuse) before booking tickets yourself with a view to reclaiming the cost or the difference after receiving your refund. Run through some options with available seats and propose them to U2.

It’s definitely worth putting in a UK261 claim on the Easyjet website, especially with technical issues listed for your flight. They are usually fairly responsive and pay quickly if they accept the claim. As @JDB says above, before booking and claiming the difference you need to give Easyjet a chance to find a more suitable alternative.
