    At the risk of being told to RTFM, and realising this info is no doubt in some other thread that I cant seem find via the search :

    On a tp run, if you are based in London, how successful or viable is it to skip the last flight on a return portion and exit at LHR with handluggage only?

    e.g. EDI-LHR-SOF-LHR-EDI run => but on the way back, exit at LHR and not go to EDI.

    Its been mentioned a few times on forums here and there but just checking its not created issues with TP earning on the last leg , bounced by BA, or other complications as my TP count is cutting it super fine and need them all. Is it risk free?

    Just looking for advice OR a link to the relevant thread as i cant find it sorry.

    Not sure what you mean by the last leg. You obviously aren’t going to earn TP on a flight you don’t take.

    Otherwise it’s something you can generally get away with, as long as you don’t do it ‘too often’.

    I’ve been told by a travel agent and in no uncertain terms that a booking originating outside the UK (to save money) must also complete in the booked final destination. BA can apparently come after the agent for the ‘correct’ fees / taxes etc. BA could, the agent told me, also elect to award no points and Avios for the flights I had taken.

    A couple of times in the past I’ve skipped the last leg due to a delay on the in-bound causing a missed final flight from London. In those cases I told BA that I won’t be on the flight because my reason for being in [wherever] had evaporated due to the missed final flight.

    If booked through a travel agent –
    * You shouldn’t skip the last leg, as the agent can be penalised and may ask you to pay them

    If you are carry-on baggage only –
    * Yes, jump out when you want. You won’t earn anything on the final leg, and don’t do it too often (they may come after you if it’s a regular thing)

    If you have checked baggage –
    * Fly into Heathrow, with your connection out of LGW or LCY. Don’t take the connection. If your connection is LHR>LHR you will have a fight on your hands to get your bag back

    BA won’t come after individual customers who do this once but they DO come after travel agents because they can simply deduct the money from commission due.

    They could use the Mennens formula (which is used for calculating downgrade reimbursement on multi part flights) where they could divide the cost of the ticket based on the distance of each leg compared to the total cost.

    So if the last leg is 10% of the total distance they’d dock you 10% of the qualifying cost.

    You can see that each leg of a flight already has a currency value if you look at the earned Avios in your statement. It’s reasonable to assume that the same calculation methods will apply to TPs post-April Fool’s Day.

    I think it’s reasonable to assume BA haven’t thought about it fully, or, if they have, they will mess up the IT implementation.

    AA do this pro-rated, each sector proportional to the fare I believe.

    The OP is doing EDI-LHR-SOF-LHR-EDI. Is this ever cheaper than LHR-SOF-LHR on its own?

    If you don’t take the LHR-EDI leg, you should get a refund of the cost of that leg (depending on the rules of your ticket) and APD should be refunded too.

    Obviously different scenario if starting outside the UK to reduce the fare and pay no APD.

    Thanks all for the feedback! Rest assured no agents were harmed here, its just a personal BAH booking. I’m getting the impression probably best to avoid trying to ditch the last segment even with hand luggage, as it could be followed up. Don’t want to lose my TP earnings over a rule they invoke given its my last TP run ever probably. Good to know though for other situations where TP wont matter. Thanks again.

    Don’t forget that with a BA hol booking if you do it as a multi city booking you can defer the last leg to a later date or just book to end the trip in LHR

    There may be cost implications of doing this but it’s worth considering.

    Last year I did a couple ex ARNs to the US where I shifted the last LHR-HEL-ARN by a couple of weeks and IIRC it cost about £100 extra but it was worth doing that for my own sanity.
