Forums Payment cards Barclaycard Avios Existing Barclaycard [blocks me from Barclaycard Avios]

  • 16 posts

Has anyone actually had success in getting Barclays to change an existing Visa Barclaycard to the Avios mastercard? I’ve had no offers in app and chat keep telling me I will be told in app if I’m eligible. I gave up 55 minutes into the queue trying to speak to a human and don’t fancy that again if it’s a fools errand.

Both me and my wife changed our old 0.5% cashback cards for an Avios one.

My travel platinum never offers any card swaps.

All Barclaycard product transfers are effective from your next statement but you can spend on the old card to collect Avios once the swap is done and before the new card arrives.

If it’s not offered then you’re not targeted for the product I’m afraid. Not sure they’ll be able to help on the phone or not.

Barclaycard refuse to accept my application as I have a Hilton Honors Platinum Visa operated by Barclaycard. Not best pleased with this discrimination or ‘targeting’ as they prefer to call it. Have decided to part with Barclaycard altogether. Although envious of all of those able to sign up to the new Avios card, I won’t miss the incompetence and inefficiency demonstrated by Barclaycard administration. Absolutely dreadful experience over the years in comparison to the likes of American Express.

You are giving away one of the most valuable products on the market in my opinion. I wouldn`t swap my HH card for anything.

+1 – happily player 2 was Barclaycard-free up to now! But it was always made clear that having another BC would exclude anyone from applying for the avios one.

I’ve got the Barclaycard Plat VISA and the app has allowed me to convert to either of the Avios cards and this has been confirmed to switch over after my next statement date.

I’ve got the same card but no sign of an offer to convert yet. I don’t put much through the Barclaycard right now so perhaps I’m not a good target?

Well yes. They’re policy is one card per customer. What part of that wasn’t clear?

    Makes no sense ….

Assuming you don’t need the Gold status, you could use the Avios from Barclaycard for Nectar points, use the money you save on shopping to buy the equivalent number of Hilton points when a 100% bonus is running and you’d be in profit.

£1 spent on Hilton card = 2 Hilton points (value 0.75pish when bought in a 100% bonus promo)
£1 spent on Barc Avios = 1 Avios (value 0.8p AT WORST when used for Nectar)

I’ve changed from the Barclays Plat to the Avios Plus not too long after it came out. I very rarely used my Barclaycard (easily under 10 transactions in the past 5yrs).

At the same time, I also have an option to downgrade my Avios card to the free version (as I’ve read some people don’t have this option in their app).

I have two Barclaycards – the Hilton Honors and the Platinum. It’s been like that for at least 3 years so perhaps this hasn’t always been their policy?

How often does Hilton run the 100% bonus? Is it annually?

Did you have to call in to switch or was that also an in app offer? Also, with the app offers is that on the dedicated Barclaycard App or the general Barclays bank one that also has a Barclaycard section?

I upgraded via the Barclays app.

In regards to offers, there’s a Barclaycard section within the Barclays app with a section titled “Transfers and Offers”. There are three offer options: Purchase Offer, Balance Transfer, and Money Transfer. Currently, I only have a Transfer Offer. (This is on iOS, – there may be a slightly different route to these options on Android.)

Additionally, contrary to what’s suggested in another thread, it’s not impossible to downgrade to the Free Avios Barclaycard within the initial 6 months of membership as the Free Card is also an available switch option in my Barclays app.

Is your Barclaycard account older than 6 months? The distinction might lie therein, I suspect. A lot of people would have applied for the card as a brand new application in order to take advantage of the 25k welcome bonus, which you wouldn’t have gotten from switching an existing card.

That’s correct. The card is nearly two decade old.

I have no intention of taking the downgrade often but it’s interesting to see there’s a downgrade Avios Bonus as well.

Well it’s definitely showing there (appreciate the pics – thanks!), but it’s another matter as to whether one will receive them after taking the downgrade route.

It seems a word was autocorrected so I changed it in your quote.

As the cards option in the app seem to be targeted, I would certainly hope so… then again, it could just be a text template they’ve neglected to change. I certainly wouldn’t hold my breath as to whether one would receive bonus points for downgrading.

Finally had a transfer offer in the app today but sadly only the regular Avios card (or the Barclaycard rewards card which also popped up) It’s offering 1k Avios for 1k spend within 3 months. I’m never going to put 20K through this as most of my spending is through Amex so it’s not great, but I might just take it and upgrade later if that comes up.

Additionally, contrary to what others seem to suggest in other threads, it’s not impossible to have a downgrade offer to the free Avios card within 6 months as this too is an option in my app.
