Forums Payment cards American Express eBay dropping Amex

  • 1,086 posts

eBay has announced they are dropping support Amex payments from August 17 “due to the unacceptably high fees American Express charges for processing credit card transactions”.

There goes a loophole for online sales that don’t support Amex on the vendor’s website.

I’d forgotten that eBay and PayPal split. So if just eBay then no personal loss for me.

I don’t think I’ve ever used a card directly on ebay. The PP option is still there, so I just click on that.

Sure the high fees relate to the risk eBay transactions pose.

And yes PayPal isn’t eBay anymore.

Given that they take 13.22% of all normal transactions from private sellers you would think they could afford to pay Amex 3% or whatever

Although the issue may be that they regularly offer free or cheaper selling

It’s why I always wait for the 80% off seller fees deals before listing.

Always pay direct. There’s a near permanent rebate of 3%-5% on my LBG & SportsLoyalty processed Cards.

Why would I care to pay direct?! They can offer me an incentive if they want. Otherwise I don’t care. What a weird comment.
The only offer I usually see on the cards I have is on Curve.

I simply don’t see the point of a 1% return from paying with Amex via Paypal, when there’s a 3%-5% rebate by paying Ebay direct using my Halifax, BoS, Lloyds, MBNA, Virgin Money, or Barclaycard.

Paypal buyer protection. If you pay direct there is no comeback after the ebay 60 day complaints period has come and gone. I had this recent with something that only cost £15 but failed after about 80-90 days. Ebay have no resolution mechanism by this point, the (business) seller washed their hands of it, so it was small claims court or nothing.
If I had gone via PayPal the dispute mechanism is for 6 months and it’s worth the 30p or so lost on buying direct with 3% cashback compared to amex via paypal.

Perhaps consider that other people don’t have those cards, no?
And what 1% via Paypal?!?! Paypal gives cashback now?

Well, that all depends on how you value the points you’ll earn using your Amex. I estimate it at 1%. What value do you place on it?

@Rui N I constantly have eBay cashback offers within my Monzo app. I’ve currently got a multi use 3% cashback offer sitting unactivated because I don’t use eBay.

Companies have the ability to stop PayPal offering Amex as a payment option on their website and eBay may choose to do this from the 17th August.
