Durham – hotel advice

I’m booking a hotel for a very close friend & her 18 year old son. Sad occasion – memorial anniversary event for her late husband. Looking for some hotel advice.
She’s booked Delta Marriott (fully flex). I’m more tempted by Indigo (Diamond with IHG which helps, though also status with Marriott). Prices similar.
Any views / alternatives?
Thank you.
Been a few years since I made regular uni trips to Durham, but Indigo used to be the best central hotel that I managed to find. Beautiful conversion of a fabulous historic building. Recommended.
They’re both in a great location (virtually across the road from each other) and not stayed in the County since it became a Delta, but I’d go Indigo too. I wouldn’t look beyond those two if you’re after a city centre location.
Excellent. Thanks both – I’ll go with Indigo then. They’ve already confirmed a room upgrade and breakfast off the back of my status.
I appreciate the comments. Never been to Durham myself – something I really think I should correct.
I completely agree regarding the Indogo, I always try to stay there when visiting the University. The building and bedrooms are truly fabulous and a fitting location in the context of your friends’ visit.
It was originally the Durham County Council HQ and latterly the University’s administration offices (including when I studied there). The Marco Pierre White restaurant is in the Senate Chamber and quite an experience, although I do not recall the food being of quite the same standard.
The Indigo is absolutely beautiful and on a par with U.K. Kimpton properties outside London IMO. Parking was a lot dearer than at the Marriott, though.
Durham and the surrounding area are delightful.
Unless the Delta has had a significant upgrade or the Indigo rate is significantly higher I’d go for the Indigo for sure.
I completely agree with the advice here – go for the Indigo every time. I have always had a good experience here and, even at busy times of year, Diamond status has always been recognised with an upgrade.
A couple of factors that may help:
– The Indigo Car Park is quite small, but I have always managed to pre-book parking in the Delta through Just Park
– Some of the rooms (eg Mansard Rooms) at the Indigo are up quite narrow and steep stairs, so be wary of those (otherwise delightful) rooms if you you mobility issues
I have been disappointed with my stays at the Marriott / Delta and genuinely would prefer the Premier Inn at Westgate if the Indigo is unavailable.
Durham and the surrounding area are delightful.
I appreciate that your visit has other purposes, but this is very true. Few things beat a sunlit early morning riverside walk around the peninsula followed by a lazy brunch. Or maybe a tramp across the moors to visit Hadrian’s wall, or a trip to Lindisfarne. Really great place.
We had a lovely meal at the Marco Pierre White restaurant in the Indigo this July for my daughter’s graduation. A family member stayed there and said her room was lovely.

Thank you, really helpful. I’ll pass on the advice.

All a reason I want to visit – I guess I should get on and do something about it. Especially given all the positive reviews about the Indigo 👍
The Durham Delta is tired and the rooms desperately need refurbishment

It looks like the decision for many Marriott hotels a couple of years ago was “shall we (a) refurbish, or (b) re-flag to Delta?” 🙁
