Forums Payment cards Barclaycard Avios Downgrading to free Barclaycard Avios card

Had the same issue as described in the above posts. Applied for the paid card which all went through very smoothly.I was pleasantly surprised and thought ‘huh, maybe Barclaycard have improved’. Hit the target for the SUB, avios transferred, so I have had the card for about 7 weeks now. I tried to downgrade in the app from paid card to free card and got the ‘no offers available’ message. I asked by chat if I could change cards and was told no. I said well its either that or cancel and they still wouldn’t budge so I cancelled.

same exact boat. the bonus posted promptly within the first £20 so I was happy with that. She did state you can re open a barclays card within 6 months. Did I not see you can open this Avios Plus after a year? or have I got that mixed up with Biz Platinum (13months actually).

You can theoretically open a new Avios Barclaycard after six months, assuming you are approved but you cannot get another SUB for two years after closing the account.

Ah, now that you mention it, yes ! Took the card out in June for the 50k offer, put a 3k deposit down for a BA holiday in July and bonus hit in one transaction.
Statements in July, August and just recently September’s. So there you go.

Thanks for confirming, expecting my 3rd statement soon, so hoping for the same. Will report back.

Today is my 3rd statement date (statement will be issued end of today). Like clockwork the downgrade option in the app is available. Seems this is an auto trigger once you’ve held the card exactly 3 months.

I got offered the downgrade a day after my second statement a couple of weeks ago. Not sure it’s as clear as always being after the third statement.

Indeed, player 2 got the downgrade option before the end of their 2nd month.
    I got it much later.

Maybe they’ve subsequently sorted their IT?

I wonder if anyone is past their 3rd statement and DOESN’T have the downgrade option?

It may well be 3 months is the worst case?

Third statement due tomorrow. No downgrade options when I checked last week, but it is there now. So not quite 3rd statement, but very close.

So, after a BA-style wait on the phone, it turns out you can’t downgrade via the webpage OR over the phone…
    Ah, well…cancellation it is.

How long have you held the card?

Since “the beginning”; the problem is I don’t have the app, and they don’t allow you to do it any other way.

I did not get the downgrade and was at the 3 month statement time albeit I hadn’t had the card that long as the first statement came before my card.

Data point: I received the offer to downgrade this morning- and it would have been this morning as I checked yesterday. I applied in mid-July and got my second statement last week.

Hit my £3000 this week, third statement yesterday (although, the statement itself is nowhere to be found in the app), and third £20. Not quite at 3 months though as I opened mid July (and had my first monthly fee and statement only a week after!) – hard to tell if the £20 fee is in advance or arrears since it did not correlate at all with opening date. Was hoping to be able to hit the target and cancel before the third charge, but alas.

No downgrade offer yet – just says ‘No Options Available’, although I’m not sure if I’d rather downgrade or just cancel and revert to Virgin Atlantic for my non-Amex spend.

Just got my statement and I’m now able to downgrade!

Had the Paid card, Earned the voucher in June. Downgraded after that and noticed today another voucher in the BAEC account issued in September, must have spent 20k by now on it. So, possibility to earn 2 vouchers in same year. Still not sure if I would be able to use either.

That is a very interesting data point.
Assuming of course you can get some use out of the voucher.

I think its taken in advance isn’t it – same occurred with me, the statement and first fee arrived before the card did 😂

And AFAIK, anyone that contacted CS (number on back of card) had this first month refunded.

When OH downgraded the corresponding month’s fee was refunded automatically. We didn’t request it as the previous fees had effectively been refunded anyway as goodwill gestures for all the initial cock-ups.

Any thoughts on whether it’s better to downgrade or cancel? Now I’ve hit the spend target, not really sure what to do with this card.

I never had any offer to downgrade – but I had tried to do it myself – and only ever got the ‘no options’ screen. WeChat couldn’t help as to the reason.

As soon as I had a zero balance however, I was able to select the basic card as an option. It asked me whether I was a BAEC member, and wanted my BA number (despite having all of that info on the plus card) and now it says my switch will be processed after my next statement – where I expect I will get another £20 charge!

Downgraded yesterday after completing the 10k spend via the app after it was showing and then not showing during the statement period and appeared yesterday again.
Selected the blue Barclaycard Avios but haven’t received any confirmation but I read that the necessary confirmation will take place prior to the beginning of the next statement period. let’s hope that is the case.

Just to confirm, it’s possible to cancel/downgrade the card + cancel avios rewards after 4 months, and there will not be any clawback to the sign up bonus?

Or is it like Amex Plat, where I need to be subscribed for a year to see the sign up bonus remain intact.

This is a new offer, the answer is nobody knows. Most likely they will claw back
