Hi my daughter is diamond elite this month and has checked into a holiday inn she was offered either 2 drinks or breakfast as her welcome amenity but I didn’t think there was a choice as I thought all diamond elites got breakfast as a minimum. It’s the holiday inn Birmingham city centre.
Hi! If I’m, not mistaken, I think for most IHG hotels, Diamond Elite members can choose one from the following:
– Breakfast (for 2 pax for all nights of stay)
– Welcome drinks (2 drinks)
– Welcome points (one-off 500 or 600 points, depending on the hotel brand)
So the breakfast is indeed one of the options that can be chosen. So when chosen, the other two options won’t apply.
Except for the case of Holiday Inn Express, where breakfast is typically provided and included with the room rate (regardless of whether one has elite status), then the welcome points can be chosen instead, on top of the breakfast that everyone is entitled to.

agreed on the above and was my choices on last two recent IHG Visits, (Voco Antwerp and CP Bruges). In addition I got upgraded to the best room in CP Bruges from a standard rewards but got no upgrade at all in the Voco

Ho thanks for that I’ll let her know
Update on the Diamond breakfast benefit – I had interpreted it as if hotel has a breakfast buffet, you get free run at the buffet. Recent reports from IC Barclay NYC (a well known nickel and diming operation) are that Diamonds are receiving bills for hot buffet food upsells or being told not to go near as it is not included. This hotel’s usual MO for paid breakfasts is to hand everyone a $55 bill for buffet breakfast, without proactively differentiating those who only had the cheaper continental option. However I did think Diamond breakfasts were not differentiated in this way.
@BWS – and I bet they expect a tip for letting you serve yourself at the buffet as well!
There is a choice of welcome amenity which depends on brand and you are supposed to tell them your choice at check in as I understand it. I also understand that the hotel reception are supposed to welcome guests by recognising status and offering all appropriate welcome amenities. If they don’t or guest believes them to be wrong then the issue should be raised there and then. I guess that as guests it our responsibility, or at least advisable, to be aware of loyalty scheme rules.
Yes, although it’s a benefit you’re entitled to, you still have to choose it as you only get one of the options (unless HIEx) and may not want the breakfast.
We stayed in the IC Boston for 6 nights back in October and they are mainly al a carte but did have a buffet at the weekends. We took the breakfast benefit, had al a carte every day which was $75-$100 per day for 2 with tax and tip – when we checked out there was about $2 to pay which they said was because we’d gone over the allowance. I would have quibbled, but it was $2….

They do, and I never give it
