I arrived on BA flight to LCY and realised my Rimowa suitcase is damaged.
I reported it on arrival but only got this small card with ref no to call and have it collected to be repaired.
I wanted to claim in on Amex Platinum insurance. When filling out the claim I need to provide Property Irregularity Report (PIR) but I don’t have it. Is that a deal breaker — do I still need to obtain it from BA?
What sort of “ref number” on the card?
If it starts with something like “BALCY” and then some numbers then that should suffice.
I recently claimed for a snapped golf driver shaft which occurred on a Jet2 flight. I raised a claim with Amex Plat and initially all I provided with the claim was a photo of the broken shaft.
Amex sent me a follow-up mail asking for various further information (including what you reference, which I didn’t have as I didn’t spot the damage until a week later).
Then before I’d had chance to respond, 2 days later they emailed me again to say they’d agreed my claim and the money was in my account.
You’ve already got more than I had, so I would submit your claim, provide what you can and see what happens.
If BA is already offering to repair the case for you, Amex Plat (or any insurer) would usually expect you to deal with the airline first. You would also have to pay Amex a £50 excess, so getting it fixed by BA may be the better option.
Somewhere on their website they have repair estimation tool. I used it recently to claim a fault on a suitcase under warranty. They offered me £20 which I contested and eventually got increased to to the true repair cost.

Yes — it does start with BA-LCYBA.
What is the amount I should be claiming under insurance? The bag is 8 years old bu now Rimowas are twice what I’ve paid for that size!

On Amex Plat, there is a per item limit of £500 (less the £50 excess). Travel policies don’t usually work on a new for old basis as good household policies do. As above, check with the BA luggage people first; you may well get a better solution.
Yes, you still need to obtain a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) from BA to file a claim with Amex Platinum insurance. The PIR is an essential document that serves as official documentation of the damage to your luggage. It will be crucial in establishing your claim and proving that the damage occurred while your luggage was under the airline’s care. Without the PIR, Amex may not be able to process your claim.
If BA still use K2 global for repairs you might as well follow the BA repair route. K2 are the accredited repairer for many premium luggage brands so if you did it independently it would be same firm doing the work. When BA damaged a Samosonite case of ours pre-covid it was collected, repaired by K2 and returned FOC.
Insurers will only pay out after you’ve followed other routes for recourse plus as others have said, you’ll have an excess on travel insurance so will cost you more even if they will cover it.
Defo go K2. You will be surprised what they can do if it turns out repair is your best option.
They are extremely straight IME over many years (although I visit in person in Maidenhead) and will tell you what is feasible and best for you given airline and insurance considerations if you speak to them once they have the suitcase.
My understanding is that K2 no longer repair Rimowas, as LVMH has taken this back in house (based on a friend who went through this in the last 3 months).
My experience with the Rimowa New Bond Street store repairs is excellent – I damaged the case handle myself, but they still fixed it for free within 1hr.
