Forums Payment cards Other payment cards Curve updates to service (applicable from 13th July 2024)

  • 269 posts

Just received this. Am I being dense or why would you want to pay something ‘high risk’? What does that mean?

We’re making a few tweaks to our Terms of Service to enable spending on your Curve card with more merchants!

    What are we changing?

You will now be able to use your Curve card to pay merchants that may otherwise be blocked by your underlying payment source provider due to the being seen as “high-risk”. To enable us to do this, we will be making the following changes:
    (a) Amendments to our Terms of Service to include a detailed description of this new service, the merchants that are subject to this fee (see this FAQ for more details) and to remove certain provisions which may prohibit us from offering it.

    (b) An update to our Subscription Schedule setting out the fee that we will be charging for enabling this new service: 1% of the transaction amount.

We’ve also updated our Curve Rewards and Curve Cash Scheme Terms to clarify where you can see your cashback retailers – jump into your Curve app and head over to ‘Rewards’ to check out your cashback providers.

What do I need to do now?
    Nothing!

The changes to our Terms of Service will either apply with immediate effect if you accept them earlier (for example, because you choose to upgrade your subscription) or will come into force on 13 July 2024.

As the changes to our Curve Rewards and Curve Cash Scheme Terms are in your favour, they will apply with immediate effect.

If you’re unhappy with the changes we’ve made, and wish to close your account, please get in touch and we’ll take it from there.

You can view our new Terms of Service here and the new Subscription Schedule here, and our new Curve Rewards and Curve Cash Scheme Terms here. You have received this email as you are a Curve customer, regardless of whether you are opted into marketing as this is a service email.

Potentially a nightmare for me. Read the list of merchants and they’re not all high risk. Anyone know a way of checking MCC codes? Without asking Curve?

    Read section 22 of the T&Cs – https://www.curve.com/en-gb/legal/terms/

Looks quite niche to me – “Government Licensed Horse/Dog Racing (U.S. Region Only)”

I am guessing, but maybe they’re blocked by the card companies primarily to prevent people S75’ing the hell out of things and wanting refunds to things that they are perhaps not entitled to. Curve offers no such protection and by using curve, you lose it from your credit cards.

Are they saying that I can do all of my gambling using a credit card and paying 1%?

Just did, thanks. I personally don’t use any of those services (mostly not at all, online betting I do, but have always done via Debit card). Dodged this round of changes.

Wouldn’t the underlying cards block the transactions anyway? Or is CURVE passing on a different MCC with the 1% charge?

What are they trying to do here? Make money by encouraging customers to indulge in things like online gambling with credit cards? Aren’t these classed as cash-like transactions and avoided by everyone here anyway? (Not to mention anyone with any financial acumen).

This seems like a recipe for disaster. Curve will surely get banned in its entirety from underlying cards.

It’s an odd move from Curve as other card issuers are generally providing ways to block gambling transactions in their apps, not encourage it.

I’ve just read the “Spending With High-Risk Merchants” section and it sounds as though the target customer is someone who wants to hire an escort, shower them with diamonds then take them to a casino 😂😂😂

Also – are any of these currently covered by fronted?

I was wondering what is wrong with dating services…

Yep, looks like they are desperate.

I pretty sure what they mean is not dating apps.

The email I received also mentioned that legacy black is ending and is being moved to curve black with the monthly subscription fee waived. There’s a few positive (eg 1% cashback is back, £1000 fronted) & a few negative (monthly cap on free ATM withdrawals and currency conversion) changes from this.

It’s extraordinary, isn’t it?! Imagine the scene: Curve’s leadership team, sitting in a (let’s hope) meeting room, trying to come up with money making ideas, and this is what they decide on? Perhaps they took inspiration by looking at their own bank statements…

Is it possible to see MCC codes either via Curve app or Barclays app (underlying card)?
    Thanks,

Well it does say US Region only for lottery and internet gambling, so maybe it is aimed at Charlie, or other public figures across the pond. Is hush money one of the MCC codes?!

Uhhh, the first one is jewellery and watch retailers. The largest jewellery and watch retailer in the UK is Argos. Does that mean Argos is high risk? As usual with Curve, it’s as clear as mud…

Small test purchase? What’s the cheapest item of jewellery they sell?!

Ahh, maybe that’s what they mean by “dating services”

I’m a sad old man but that was exactly my thought when presented with an advert for an escort service in Brazil which took credit cards: “I wonder what MCC they use?”

I wonder how they would distinguish a non-jewellery purchase from a jewellery one. This just screams incompetence
