Forums Payment cards Other payment cards Curve + Paypal

Curve are now allowing you to add a PayPal account (I think I’m in a beta version anyway). Seems to allow funding source to be an Amex althought the mail suggested it is PayPal credit or Mastercard/Discover only. Will have a play around and report back anything I notice, but this is possibly interesting!!

Just play a bit more – it is only those options. So unless I’m missing something, don’t see why you’d do this vs just adding the card directly to Curve

I don’t have this option but I’d be keen to give it a go. Extra layer of obfuscation might prevent a cash advance fee on certain cards?

    Interesting. Metal only I guess?

I’m on Metal plan and do not have this option. Could be in the new 2.0 version?

I think that, to the extent this would allow a back door to allow Curve to work with Amex again, it’s reasonable to expect Amex to respond very firmly. F&F payments already upset them but this would be much worse. If you want to have an ongoing relationship with Amex, this would seem an unwise path to tread.

To be clear, you cannot set a Amex or a Visa card as a funding source so no major points angle except possibly the cash thing but I imagine that’ll upset someone along the way eventually so I wouldn’t be doing that personally!

It’s in Beta so coming soon if you don’t get an invite before hand

Further to these comments, just had an email from curve about the paypal beta today, including this bullet point from them:

    3. Report back. If you hit any bugs or issues, please fill in this form and someone from our product team will be in touch directly to fix it for you. We’ll also send you a survey on Monday, 11 September to get your thoughts on the whole experience.

So they’ll send a survey yesterday about something they are inviting me to join today? Another example of their incompetence/lack of care.

Has anyone successfully tried this as backdoor to link Curve to Amex ? Curve to Paypal to Amex ?

Yes I managed it by sideloading an apk into the curve app.

    Not really.

There is no option to use Amex as a funding source.

Yep, just tried it and can’t get it to work. Totally pointless then connecting Paypal, as poster above said you might as well just add the underlying card straight to Curve.

Sorry, I mentioned this on the other thread – so many threads

Can’t use Amex or Visa, but you can fund Paypal with a corporate Mastercard (e.g. Barclaycard Business Select with 1% cashback), and it seems to allow me to put it as my primary Paypal funding source for Curve transactions

Does that mean we can now have >£1.5k business transactions again, provided we do it via Paypal? It’s not mentioned in the 13 Nov T&Cs, so…

No Amex can be added to curve + PayPal option.

Just tried the curve and paypal connection and amex doesnt work, what is the point? Why not just pay with the actual cc and curve?
Oh wait I know, its so you lose your S75 protection and curve doesnt have to pay out.

S75 is for Credit cards not debit cards therefore S75 is not applicable when using Curve regardless of underlying payment method.

@kt74 already explained why PP is useful.
You lose S75 every time you use Curve, PayPal is irrelevant.

Does anyone know if curve passes the transaction type or MCC to PayPal and then PayPal back to the card for these payments?

    @rob-london
, I tried the setup with transactions from restaurants and coffee shops, all settled as “POI funding transactions”. I think this is MCC 6540.

So yeah, it looks like Curve doesn’t do MCC pass through with this Paypal integration. And because of this MCC code, I’ve decided to stop using it too, in case of any cash advance fees.
