Forums Payment cards Other payment cards Curve / Barclays refund madness

  • 7 posts

I’ve had a massive mess recently where charges/refunds on Curve would not at all line up with my Barclays credit card. I’ve had two car hires with Europcar that were cancelled (in time by me or by Europcar) for full refunds.

On my curve card I have three refunds and one charge (???) and on my Barclaycard four charges and three refunds (????), so as far as I can tell I’m one hire charge down and no idea who’s even at fault. So far still no response from Curve CS.

Is this a common thing? Lesson learned not to use Curve for anything involving refunds and/or pre-authorizations?

To me, it seems like an incredible cowboy operation if I have to check both on Curve and the linked CC whether refunds have happened, especially if the dates and numbers of transactions don’t remotely line up.

Curve is fine with refunds, although if they can’t marry a refund with a previous purchase, it may go to Curve cash rather than the underlying card.

It’s also hardly surprising given the nature of Curve that refunds need to be checked on both Curve and the underlying card.

As you have identified, and as often mentioned here, using debit cards, including Curve for pre-authorisation is likely to cause problems as they simply aren’t designed for ‘holds’. If Europcar has correctly processed each of the transactions, it should all tally, but could take maybe take up to a week for everything to post correctly.

New to Curve. I used my Curve for hold/ deposit when checking in a hotel. The underlying credit card was never charged, but on Curve it was, and indeed got refunded later on. However, does it mean going forward I should use an actual credit card not Curve for deposit/ holds?

Indeed you don’t want to use Curve for any ‘hold’ transactions and you can switch to it for a final payment. Some hotels and car hire firms don’t seem too clear on the difference between a hold and a charge.
