Without fanfare Crown Plaza Reading city centre closed at the end of 2024. Liked the location in the last year; though the hotel was a shabby shell of its former self.
It used to be a nice hotel but the rooms were in need of refurbishment. Fortunately I no longer need to visit Reading as it’s not the nicest place!
@ BP – from what I understand, Reading has got a good University, or certainly one that students want to attend.

There are far worse wannabe cities in the UK! It’s on the Thames and the Kennet & Avon canal, has some rather splendid Victorian buildings and of course Reading Abbey founded by Henry I a few steps from the centre. It is also home to many major businesses and good retailers.
I’m not sure the Crowne Plaza will be greatly missed. The Roseate is an acceptable alternative hotel with a fairly decent restaurant.
Full disclosure: I was there this afternoon.
@JDB – I quite like Reading, but I don’t live there. Usually join/leave the M4 there and often stop when returning from Wales and the West Country. I’ll make a note of the Roseate. Hope you enjoyed your meal/stay there, or both.
Looks like it was bought by Village Hotels and will be refurbished and rebranded.

Great, get ready for a trendy gym, coach trips, quiz nights and a pub singer!
Will it then be full of Village People?!

I used to stay there often too when it was called “The Forbury”. It was always a nice place to stay and the restaurant (and room service) was very nice.
It didn’t really stand a chance once the CP Winnersh opened. The have some excellent spa facilities and usually empty during the week. This was formerly a holiday Inn

Bit O/T but I stayed at the Winnersh one last year and when I presented my complimentary drink voucher at the bar, I was told the only beer available to me was one that was not even on sale! Whilst its common for it to only be the cheapest beer or wine, I didnt expect that.
