First time booking with Hilton points. Saying at Hilton London Bankside.
Booked whole stay with points but had to put a credit card number in which I assume is standard.
When we arrive will they put a hold on the card?
Thanks
There will a hold for incidentals (£100 per day probably) but nothing more, and you can give then whatever card you want.
What always makes me laugh is Moxy hotels. They put a £10 hold on your card. I mean …. is it really worth it?! They’ve already got a card on file, even if a reward. If I do a runner, the most they would lose is £10. Hardly seems worth the admin.
And always make sure the card you give the for a hold is a credit not a debit card.
Recent experience in the US paying for the room in USD on my Wise debit card (because I had a large USD balance) was a miserable one.
Even though the rooms were prepaid in full months in advance, many of the hotels used the same card to take a hold pre-arrival/pre-checkin, up to $100 at HIX which is ridiculous, and then take a full month to refund
As diamond only about 25% of hotels put a hold for points bookings. At check in maybe 50% of hotels (the higher-end ones) ask if it’s ok to charge the card on my hilton profile for incidentals, but most don’t preauthorise anything
There was a story, during covid I think, of Marriott charging a cash penalty for cancelling a reward booking late, if I remember correctly. Wonder what happened to that.

Isn’t that the norm? I think IHG do that too. The smallprint says that cancelling after X time will lead to a cash charge of (usually one night’s rate, higher than the cheapest rate currently available)

+1 –
I recently made the mistake of using my first choice travel payment card ( A Chase Debit Card) in Canada on a pre-paid booking and it took 5 weeks for my pre-authorisation funds to be released.
And as another observation from 2 recent stays, check the card you want to use is the one that shows on the online check in page – or when you check in.
I had used one card to reserve the booking but later changed it, in my upcoming bookings on the app, to the card I wanted to pay with. At the check in page, both times, I noticed the previous card details were showing, so had to change the details again.
