Forums Payment cards American Express Confirmation about supp card holder requested

Got an email today asking me to confirm details on my Supp card on my Platinum. OH has been there 4 years, I guess. She is real and not a stuffed cat.

Never heard of this before. Watch out for scams!

I received the same request today for supp details but for my Platinum Cashback Card.

Happening to lots of people on the FB group for Amex Plat. Wonder if they are clamping down on Tinder Swindler style accounts or self referrals for supp card.

I just got the same email and came here to ensure it was legit. Appears like it is. I’m guessing anyone with a supplementary card holder will be required to do the same at some stage (unless it’s become mandatory at application time now).

Here are a few more details from the email:

As a financial institution, American Express is required to hold accurate and up to date information on our customers. Doing so enables us to comply with regulatory requirements, including anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing legislation, and to maintain the security of your Account.

We are writing to ask you as the main Cardholder, to update the information we hold on file about the Supplementary Cardholder on your Account, with Card ending xxxxx.

To ensure that they continue to enjoy the benefits of their American Express® Cardmembership, please provide the following documentation for your Supplementary Cardholder within 10 days from the date of this communication.

Clear and legible copies of the following:
      • Proof of identity
      • Proof of full residential address.

There is a lot of this going on with Amex at the moment. I had a note saying I should expect some questions re my Business account. Just seems to be ticking some regulatory boxes re ‘know your customer’.

I received that as well, only for my Amex Rewards Supplementary card. What I thought was odd is they mention about a Bank Statement that states the full name of the person, and they actually validate it. I submitted my wife’s Barclaycard Statement that only has initials and surname, and got a validation error. I did then said to proceed because if they dispute that I am not quite sure which bank statement I can provide that has her full name written on it.

I too had this request for proof of identity for a supplementary cardholder — my husband — several weeks ago.

Because the “Click here” link to upload documents was to some third-party URL domain, I decided it was obviously a phishing attempt. I called American Express, who confirmed that it was not from them, and they asked me to forward the email to a security team.

A month later, I had another similar email, which I ignored.

Last week, a third email arrived, but the “Click here” link is now to an americanexpress.com domain, so I called Amex again. They now admit that all of these emails were from them all along.

My husband is a supplementary card holder on several Amex cards where I am the primary one. Similarly, I am a supplementary on most of his cards.

The agent claimed that just one account is selected for the id check. If the check is not completed, you lose supplementary cards on ALL accounts, not just the one being requested.

The agent was unable to explain:

    – Why Amex were sending out emails with phishing red-flags, i.e. third-party domain links
    – Why my husband has not been asked to verify me for his accounts
    – Why no other credit card company thinks the money-laundering legislation requires this (yet)
    – Why I need to verify id when Amex have had an established relationship with us both for several years and therefore know full well what our address is and that we are real

I spoke to Amex about the email as I couldn’t get the link to work – he was astounded that I wanted to post the requested paperwork- that made me feel very old!

I got the email again last week. I uploaded all the docs first time round. I’m not doing it again.

I am quite surprised about this.

The main cardholder remains responsible for all spending on the account including spend on supplementary card. The supplementary cardholder has no presence on Amex and they can’t count it for their own credit record.

Addtionally, many people use supplementary cards to separate different types of expenses incurred by themselves. Say, business, vs personal, or client-paid expenses vs own business expenses. I am sure some people change the user of their supplementary cards frequently even possibly passing the same supp card to the next user. I am sure they are going to ask their private bank to sort something out and dump Amex if Amex is insisting they provide the personal details of Ms Marina Legatova when they are married with three kids.

If Amex is keeping me fully responsible for all spend then it’s no business of theirs which of my cat’s personal carers is using my supp card to take him to hotels and restaurants (he has his own trust fund and I am my wealthy aunt’s executor. He has 24-hr care by 4 carers each week and they all need to spend in the course of maintaining this arrogant mongrel’s lifestyle 🙂 ).

I have not bothered with Amex for many years but this kind of intrusive questioning about a card user I am fully responsible for with whom they notably have no direct relationship just takes the card downmarket for me.

The dreaded email has arrived – proof of ID and address for all my supps on my Platinum. Such a chore. And the threat in the email that if I don’t within 60 days my account will be closed.

I wonder if this happens to people whose supplementary card holders are not Amex card holders.
My supp card is my wife’s and she had amexs, so I haven’t received any such requests.

My supps are all Amex members in their own right and have been my supps for over 10 years. All very strange – apparently some new regulation which would suggest everyone has to do it, but perhaps not judging by the lack of comments about it on here.

I had it a while back. Apart from the clumsy way it was requested with the impression of being a phishing effort, I didn’t feel it warranted commenting on. Having had a business account with HSBC it felt pretty light touch. At one point I was worried that HSBC were going to demand that I turned up to Canary Wharf with both sets of grandparents to vouch for my good character.

This made me laugh, it’s spot on . They’re the only bank that has ever made me feel like I was under investigation by MI5! Their expat mortgage underwriter still gives me nightmares.

I had this request a while ago whilst trying to add a business plat supp. Then it wouldn’t work so they readded and it worked and didn’t request the info that time.

Been bothered repeatedly by Amex for supp info. And each of us supps are card holders in our own rights. It’s just mad. Tried to reason with someone the other day. Told them they already had all my info on my own 3 cards. But to no avail. Just had to upload 8 x 2 sets of docs just to appease Amex. And got thanked in return…
One thing l did notice was. We had both been rejected for basic Amex cards before uploading info. Tried again this week, and lo and behold, cards approved this time… so they may block referrals until supp info is uploaded. That’s my take on it atm.

I have had this request in the past on a Santander World Elite supplementary cardholder so not just Amex

My wife is my only supp on both my BAPP and Platinum Charge Card. She is a long standing BA blue cardholder and has churned the Business Gold card few times on the business we are both directors of. She has the supp cards linked to her account on the Amex app together with her personal card (that she still use regularly i. TFL and for small purchases). I have not received any request for info but cannot remember if there were requested when I last added her to my platinum in April this year
