Forums Payment cards Barclaycard Avios Compensation for a 2.5 month long card delay?

  • 2 posts

I’m wondering if there is a benchmark for compensation after a long delay in receiving an Avios Plus card, and so missing the chance to earn the 25,000 Avios bonus? It basically took me over 2.5 months to receive my card leaving me about 10 days to earn the bonus points. This was card number 3 after 2 others failed to arrive. During one of my first (but many) phone calls about this I was assured that the offer would not start until my card was activated and yet now Barclaycard don’t seem to be able to amend the offer date or offer any other way of earning or being gifted the points.

The complaints team originally offered £75 in compensation stating this was the equivalent of a BA flight if I redeemed the points to Europe. I stated I wasn’t happy with this and highlighted the HfP article on what an Avios point is worth. They raised this to £100 which I am still not happy with. I should say they also did refunded 2 months card fee while I was waiting for the card, but only after I called each time I was billed for it.

The whole saga has reminded me why I cancelled my last Barclaycard 10 years ago. I’m minded just to cancel again but thought I’d check if others had any helpful advice before I do?

It’s unacceptable that you had to wait this long for the card but it seems to be unbelievably difficult to get Barclays to actually do anything which requires an adjustment to their IT. £100 is a pretty paltry amount given that you can get to MIA for 25k avios plus £50 now. The only think I can think of is that you could try to get an undertaking from them to award the 25k manually if you spend the £3k in the next 3 months, which is absolutely possible if they can award multiple amounts of 5k for inconvenience to other customers.

I received the credit card promptly, but then opened the Premier bank account and their IT had all sorts of issues with matching up or even storing the names and addresses correctly, despite having been correctly and identically provided at time of application.

Eventually I had to make an appointment in branch to sort it out, and they were very helpful. In terms of compensation they offered £200, which was less than I had asked but had positioned it as being messed about for nearly 2 months and having to spend my time sorting their IT issues – eg what do they consider a Premier Banking customer’s time to be worth?

Decent result all round albeit the sort of hassle that shouldn’t happen in the first place.

No one is “entitled” to any compensation for anything.

If you’re not happy close your account (again) and take your business elsewhere.

You seem not to be aware of contract law or even basic fairness.

Make sure you spend the £5k or whatever it was on the card (or can show you have spent this on another card in that timeframe). Escalate to the FOS claiming the cost of purchasing 25,000 avios via the ba website, as well as any fee charged when you didn’t have the card, plus £50 for your troubles.

Please show said contract law that states a monetary or otherwise compensation is required legally.

Right. So as I said. No automatic “entitlement”

    You said –

No one is “entitled” to any compensation for anything.

And I said yes you are, if the contract says so. In addition, yes you are entitled (in a non legal sense) if a company mucks you around too much (evidenced by many companies giving refunds, compensation amounts, even Avios if your IFE doesn’t work…)

I would tend to agree with the OP. Nobody is entitled to a goodwill gesture however they may be entitled to compensation. By the sounds of it the OP has a compelling case and it may be likely that the Financial Ombudsman Service require Barclaycard to pay it.

how come you are misquoting yourself, what you said was

” “No one is “entitled” to any compensation for anything. ”

Which is of course rubbish, people are entitled to compensation day and daily, based on the other party failing on a contract and the terms of the contract.

Which obviously you realised, but rather than admitting your mistake, you attempted to go with alternate facts that you said “automatic entitlement”, which isn’t what you said.

On topic I’d definitely complain about this, lazy as I am, and be prepared to take it to FOS if Barclays refused to give me either a proper 3 months to spend the required amount, or the 25K Avios as a gesture.
My experience of Barclays complaints procedures is they are as woeful as the customer service that leads to the complaints. The way they bill you before you’ve even received the card I’m sure would not be acceptable if it was pursued. On that for me they credited the £20 as a goodwill gesture, I accepted but made it clear I didn’t accept it was goodwill, it was what they needed to do.
As I’ve said previously I spent the £10K, got the voucher and cancelled, well downgraded to the free card. It maybe useful, not sure. But the £20/month once you’ve earned the voucher makes the card a poor keeper, you’ve got to be spending a lot (£4K+ a month) to make the £20 worth it over the free card.

Whilst we’re all guilty of it at times, this thread is an example of why moderation is needed in forums. Yes I’m aware that highlighting it is contributing to the problem.

Play them at their own chosen game.

Rack up some refundable hotels, get the bonus and annual spend upgrade voucher, refund the hotels, cancel the card and take your business to Amex or Virgin who won’t take 2.5 months to deliver you a card.

You’ve been exceptionally reasonable, just take what you’re “entitled” to!
