Hi There….. I’m a bit new to this so would really appreciate some help please
After reading a previous post on here :
“book your return flights online as a fresh booking, without your companion voucher. This will obviously cost the full Avios price. You can later call British Airways at a time convenient to you to merge the two itineraries, apply your companion voucher to the return flights and get half of your Avios refunded.”
We have booked 1 x one way ticket: LHR —> JNB/ using companion voucher / taxes + 100,000 avios
We Have booked 1 x one way ticket: JNB —> LHR/ using companion voucher / taxes + 200,000 avios
Just rang BA asked to merge the 2 x bookings said this wasn’t possible ?!
Even got him to check with his supervisor
What am I doing wrong ? have they changed the rules maybe
Thanks Simon

Hang up and call again, until you find an agent who knows what they are doing. It is still possible to connect the bookings, with half the avios refunded. We just did it last week for a SIN HKG ticket.
@sythai – I think it may just be a matter of terminology. Airlines can split bookings but cannot merge them. You are simply asking BA to apply the voucher to the second booking so as to get 50% of the Avios refunded. They do this with some sort of linking, but nothing that will be visible to you and you will still have two PNRs.

They didn’t merge the bookings into a single one though did they?
All they did was put a note in the PNR. These notes only get seen if someone goes into the booking. Which they ordinarily won’t.
Yes, two different things being conflated and seeming to cause an inordinate amount of confusion to the uninitiated!
There have been a few posts recently from people saying BA agents are refusing to refund the avios regardless, so HUACA may indeed be required, or try chat/Xwitter.
Just to clarify I thought the ability to buy a one way inbound ticket and get the Avios refunded was only possible if you originally only booked the outbound at T-355 as the return flights hadn’t yet been released.
If the inbound flught is available you have to book it at the same time as the outbound if you want to use the companion voucher.
It depends on the agent, there are various conditions they may or may not insist on!
